PROCLAMATION
Whereas, homeownership has been a key feature of our way of life since America's
earliest days;
Whereas, it has been a longstanding national policy, predating President Abraham
Lincoln's signed of the Homestead Act; and
Whereas, homeowners work to keep up the value of their investment, which
translates into a greater concern for neighborhoods and surrounding communities; and
Whereas, the United States is fortunate to have become a nation composed primarily
of homeowners and while minority homeownership rates have increased, Hispanics and
AlÌican-Americans still lag significantly behind the overall national homeownership rate;
and
Whereas, the federal government is working to ensure that homeownership
opportunities are equally available to all American's through new initiatives that make
down payment capital available to low-income homebuyers, and through vigorous
enforcement of fair housing laws and all anti -discrimination statues.
Now, Therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the CityofIowa City, Iowa, do
hereby proclaim June 2004 as
Homeownership Month
I call upon the people of Iowa City to join me in recognizing the importance of realizing
the dream of homeowners hip. I call on real estate, finance, and associated sectors and on
faith-based, community, and non-profit groups to help us work toward making that dream
a reality for all citizens.
