City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people across the nation celebrate their pride in their culture and community in the month of June; and Whereas, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people in the Iowa City community will celebrate Pride Month in June; and Whereas, the Iowa City community is strengthened and enhanced through the contributions of all its diverse citizens; Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, homeownership has been a key feature of our way of life since America's earliest days; Whereas, it has been a longstanding national policy, predating President Abraham Lincoln's signed of the Homestead Act; and Whereas, homeowners work to keep up the value of their investment, which translates into a greater concern for neighborhoods and surrounding communities; and Whereas, the United States is fortunate to have become a nation composed primarily of homeowners and while minority homeownership rates have increased, Hispanics and AlÌican-Americans still lag significantly behind the overall national homeownership rate; and Whereas, the federal government is working to ensure that homeownership opportunities are equally available to all American's through new initiatives that make down payment capital available to low-income homebuyers, and through vigorous enforcement of fair housing laws and all anti -discrimination statues. Now, Therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the CityofIowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim June 2004 as Homeownership Month I call upon the people of Iowa City to join me in recognizing the importance of realizing the dream of homeowners hip. I call on real estate, finance, and associated sectors and on faith-based, community, and non-profit groups to help us work toward making that dream a reality for all citizens. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, outsourcing takes jobs away from the local community and money spent at local businesses stays in Iowa City; Whereas, local businesses support community events and CIVIC organizations; Whereas, the US Government has not ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child; Whereas, there are 246 million child laborers between the ages of 5 and 17, many of which displace American workers; Whereas, 179 million children are trapped in the worst forms of child labor, including trafficking, forced & bonded labor, hazardous work, armed conflict, and illicit activities; Whereas, 110 million children are not attending schools, and two thirds of them are girls; Whereas, the children at Lucas Elementary have formed together to encourage people to buy locally and domestically to counteract child labor; Now, Therefore, I, Ernest W.
