City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, in the early part of the twentieth century Iowa football was played on the east side of the Iowa River about where the EPB building now stands, and capacity was 22,000 per game; and Whereas, ground was broken for a new stadium on March 6, 1929, and the design called for two matching grandstands constructed qf steel, concrete, and brick with a capacity of 45,000, and 30 feet of construction below ground level; and Whereas, over 250 workers and 50 teams of horses and muIt~s worked around the clock unearthing numerous underground springs and encountering heavy spring rains to complete the project in just seven months; and Whereas, the first game, known as the shakedown game, was played in the new Iowa Stadium on October 5, 1929, against Monmouth College with the Hawkeyes cruising to a 46-0 victory; and Whereas, on September 23, 1972, Iowa Stadium was renamed "Kinnick Stadium", after Iowa's only player to win the Heisman Trophy, Nile Kinnick, with Kinnick's father taking part in the ceremony; and Whereas, earlier this summer in the Iowa City and Coralville area 75 statues of the official mascot of the Iowa Hawkeyes "Herky On Parade" kicked-off the 75th anniversary celebration of historic Kinnick Stadium; and Whereas, a renovation of Kinnick Stadium is underway and when completed in 2006 will increase capacity to 70,000. Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, suicide is the 11 th leading cause of all deaths in the United States and the 3rd leading cause of death among people from the age of 15 to 24; and WHEREAS, suicide is the 13th leading cause of all deaths in Iowa, and the 2nd leading cause of death among people from the age 15 to 24 in Iowa; and WHEREAS, in the United States, one person completes suicide every 17 minutes; and WHEREAS, an estimated 4.45 million people in the United States are survivors of suicide (those who have lost a loved one to suicide); and WHEREAS, the stigma associated with mental illness works against suicide prevention by discouraging persons at risk for suicide from seeking lifesaving help; and WHEREAS, organizations such as the Crisis Center, dedicated to reducing the frequency of suicide attempts and deaths through educational programs and intervention services, urge that we recognize suicide as a national and state public health problem and declare suicide prevention to be a priority; and WHEREAS, most suicides are preventable; NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City ofIowa City, do hereby proclaim September 5th - 11 th, 2004, as Suicide Prevention Week in Iowa City.
