City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, October 2004 is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month; and Whereas, October 15, 2004 is National Mammography Day; and Whereas, almost 216,000 new cases of female breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2004 and over 40,000 will die from the disease; and Whereas, almost 1,500 new cases of male breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2004 and close to 500 will die ofthe disease; and Whereas, early detection and prompt treatment can significantly reduce suffering and deaths caused by this disease; and I Whereas, mammography, an "x-ray" of the breast, is recognized as the single most effective method of detecting breast changes that may be cancer long before physical symptoms can be seen or felt; Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. I PROCLAMATION Whereas, arts and culture affect every aspect of life in our community, the state, and the nation today, including the economy, social problem solving, job creation, education, and community livability; and Whereas, a coalition of more than 50 cultural entities comprises the Johnson County Cultural Alliance, which works to increase public awareness of, and participation in, arts and culture; and Whereas, the Johnson County Cultural Alliance is partnering with the Cedar Rapids Area Cultural Alliance, for citizens up and down the "Cultural Corridor;" and Whereas, the month of October 2004 has been recognized as "Culture's Alive- Cultural Awareness Month" in the City ofIowa City, and Whereas, all citizens of Iowa City, Coralville, Cedar Rapids and the surrounding communities will be encouraged to log on to culturalcorridor.org and participate in this celebration Now therefore, be it resolved, that I, Ernie Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim October, 2004 as: "Culture's Alive" Month and urge Iowa City residents to participate in and to celebrate the cultural riches our community has to offer. Whereas, somewhere in the United States, a home-fire death occurs about every three hours, of which the highest risk groups are children aged five and under, and senior citizens; and Whereas, 80 percent of fatal home-fire victims are aged 20 and under, and are killed in homes without working smoke alarms, between the hours of 10:00 PM and 06:00 AM, when most people sleep; and I Whereas, households with inoperative smoke alarms now outnumber those homes with no smoke alarms, and smoke alarms most often fail because of dead or missing batteries; and Whereas, the designation of a special day to remind residents of Iowa City to change the batteries in their smoke detectors, timed to coincide with the fall ritual of changing clocks, would greatly diminish the chance of this tragedy occurring in Iowa City; and Whereas, smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years; and Whereas, October 31, 2004, is the day the citizens of Iowa City change their clocks from daylight savings time to standard time. Lee Community Recreation Center was considered a state-of-the-art facility in the State of Iowa, and continues to be one of the better community recreation centers in the state; and Whereas, programs have changed over the years, but the Robert A. Lee Community Recreation Center continues to play a vital role in the community, making recreation opportunities available to everyone; and Whereas, the Parks and Recreation Commission and staff value the support of the community; and Whereas, 40 years is a significant milestone in the life of this important community facility; and Whereas, the 40th anniversary will be recognized with games and activities to showcase what was available to the public over the past 40 years. Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim October 9th to be a Day of Celebration at the Robert A. Tragically, for many Americans, these are blessings that are tarnished by violence and fear; and Whereas, domestic violence is more than the occasional family dispute. Last year, the Johnson County Domestic Violence Intervention Program sheltered 275 women and children and provided community support services to 586 women, men, and children; and Whereas, according to the National Crime Victimization Survey report Intimate Partner Violence, 691,710 individuals were victimized by domestic violence in 2001; and Whereas, despite significant progress in providing rights and services to crime victims over the past two decades, large segments of our population- including crime victims who are elderly, young, disabled, or living in rural areas, are still underserved; and Whereas, a coalition of organizations has emerged to directly confront this crisis. Law enforcement officials, those involved with shelters and hotline services, health care providers, clergy, and other concerned citizens are helping in the effort to end domestic violence. Now, therefore, I, Ernest W.
