January 1994 EXPERIENCE AND ACTIVITIES I am the Owner/Manager of Arena Auto Body which I established in December of 1981. Arena started with a 3200 sq. ft. building and 2 employees. It has grown to 12000 sq. ft. and 15 employees. Arena is one the largest auto body repair centers in the State of Iowa. As manager, I needed to develop the skills that are necessary to keep a lid on costs, yet still maintain a high standard of auto body repair work. I feel these skills would help me to be a good Airport Commissioner. My activities include old Corvettes and Airplanes. I have 3 early Corvettes that I bring to Corvette shows and functions. I also have a 1974 Piper Cherokee Airplane, which is kept at the Iowa City Airport. I purchased the airplane on December 31, 1993 in "rag-tag" condition, then restored it during the past year. By far, my favorite activity is flying. I've been flying since 1986 and achieved my Instrument Rating in 1990. My interest in flying would also contribute to my ability to perform well as a member of the Airport Commission. PRESENT KNOWLEDGE OF THE AIRPORT COMMISSION At the present time, my experience of the Airport Commission is limited. I attended the Commission's last meeting on December 13 to observe some of its duties and functions. I feel I can learn more about the Commission and its functions quick enough to become a competent member. REASON FOR APPLYING I can't keep away from the Airport. I go there every chance I can. I have a sincere desire to help with it's growth and prosperity. I feel that some of my qualifications can help achieve that. I feel the Airport Commission is the liason between the City Council and the flying public. ! think %hat my activities as a pilot and an owner of an aircraft can help re-inforce this relationship. 610 Southgat? January 19£ 830 Evergreen Court Iowa City, IA 52245 January 5, 1995 Dear Iowa City Council Members: I have made application to serve as a member of Broadhand Telecommunications Commition for a three.year term to begin in March, 1995. I have attended most of the public meetings of the commission over the past year and am familiar with the issues before it, including those surrounding the renewal of the current franchise. I also have familiarity with the telecommunicatiot~ industry generally as I worked for Connecticut Public Television for a number of years in the 1970s. I have two concerns which I would like to share with you, concerns which I would hope to address as a member of the commission. 1) It is my general impression the local cable company has fallen behind industry norms in terms of the service it provides, especially the number of channels, while the rates for its services are about the level of the industry average. 2) Of 8reater import, over the next few years, the role of cable providers will change dramatically from senders of one-way TV signals down the line to interactive providers of access to information. This might involve remote reading of water meters (as mentioned at the last City Council meeting), direct access to the Internet, or a variety of other interactive services of interest to the community. In this shi~, it is imperative that local cable companies put the appropriate technology in place to serve these new needs, needs in which the community will have an interest which might go beyond the current interest of a cable TV franchise. Clearly, the city will have to work closely with the cable company to get it to include new broad community cuneema in its Finally, a brief note about myself. I moved to Iowa City in 1988. I am an Associate Professor of History at the University, with a speciality in Russian history. My wife, Eeva, a Finnish national, works in the University Libraries. Both my children were born in Iowa City. Nathaniel, aged five, is in kindergarten in the Hoover school. Andrew, aged 3, attends the Small World Day Care Center. With the children somewhat older, I now have the time to involve myself in the community and would welcome the opportunity to volunteer my services to as a member of the Broadband Telecommunications Commission.
