EXPERIENCE AND ACTIVITIES
I am the Owner/Manager of Arena Auto Body which I
established in December of 1981. Arena started with a
3200 sq. ft. building and 2 employees. It has grown to
12000 sq. ft. and 15 employees. Arena is one the largest
auto body repair centers in the State of Iowa. As
manager, I needed to develop the skills that are
necessary to keep a lid on costs, yet still maintain a
high standard of auto body repair work. I feel these
skills would help me to be a good. Airport Commissioner.
My activities include old Corvettes and Airplanes.
have 3 early Corvettes that I bring to Corvette shows
and functions. I also have a 1974 Piper Cherokee
Airplane, which is kept at the Iowa City Airport. I
purchased the airplane on December 31, 1993 in "rag-tag"
condition, then restored it during the past year. By
far, my favorite aotivity is flying. I've been flying
since 1986 and achieved my Instrument Rating in 1990. My
interest in flying would also contribute to my ability
to perform well as a member of the Airport Commission.
PRESENT KNOWLEDGE OF THE
AIRPORT COMMISSION
At the present time, my experience of the Airport
Commission is limited. I attended the Commission's last
meeting on December 13 to observe some of its duties and
functions. I feel I can learn more about the Commission
and its functions quick enough to become a competent
member.
REASON FOR APPLYING
I can't keep away from the Airport. I go there every
chance I c~n. I have a sincere desire to help with it's
growth and prosperity. I feel that some of my
qualifications can help achieve that. I feel the Airport
Commission is the liason between the City Council and
the flying publi~. I think that my activities as a pilot
and an owner oX an aircraft can help re-inforce this
relationship.

Iowa City - City Council
Civic Center, 410 East Washington Street
Iowa City, Iowa 52240
Dear Council Members;
I am applying for the at large seat on the Iowa City Historic Preservation
Commission. I have recently moved back to Iowa City, after a four year period of
commuting from Anamosa, low-a, where my partner was director of the Main
Street Anamosa program. During our stay in Anamosa, we restored an historic
house and a building on Hain Street (which ! still own). Hy partner's work
significantly impacted the community during his tenure with HSA. In 1992, he left
the MSA program, to work for Trees Forever. At that time, I felt that I could
become invo,~.,ed with HSA without giving ~he appearance of a conflict of interest.
We lived as an openly gay couple in a small town that was surpr~slngly accepting, in
large part due to our high visibility and our achievements, both public and private,
in the area of historic preservation.
At first, I served as a member of the Design Committee, later becoming chair of
this committee. A major responsibility of the DesiD'l Committee was making
design suggestions to building owners: color schemes, appropriate window and
door treatments, awning design, sign placement and arrangement. We awarded
matching grants of up to $500 for fagade renovation. Among other projects we
sponsored were: an annual clean up day, new trash receptacles and benches, a
sponsored lunch time musical program in the summer, and a mural on one of the
buildings downtown. I was elected as the Design Committee representative to the
Board of Directors of PISA and became the Secretary of the Board in 1993.
Through my work with the Plain Street Program, I developed contacts at the state
and national level in the Hain Street program and the National Trust for Historic
Preservation. !n the past, I have volunteered for the Dows Historical Society, the
Hidwest Train Pluseurn, and the Madrid Historical Society. i have a deep
appreciation for our history and would enjoy working on this commission. Thank
you for giving my application due consideration. I have attached a resume and a
of references.
