W HCDC Application (4) February 2004 EXPERIENCE AND/OR ACTIVITIES WHICH YOU FEEL QUALIFY YOU FOR THIS POSITION: I have been actively involved in multiple human services organizations. I was a member of the Red Cross (Cruz Roja) in Spain where I volunteered in a ward of terminally ill immigrants from Northern Africa. I spent two years in AmeriCorps as a volunteer high school teacher at an underprivileged school in Alabama. I worked at a pregnancy clinic in Cedar Rapids. I volunteered for EI Buen Vecino, teaching Hispanic immigrants English and helping them find housing and employment in Indiana. I clerked for a legal aid clinic in Michigan, helping Hispanic migrant workers with legal issues involving assisted housing, employment, domestic abuse, and immigration. Because I have worked with various human services organizations throughout my life, I am familiar with their needs and limited resources. My experience in AmeriCorps particularly impressed upon me the importance of these organizations. After AmeriCorps, I attended law school at the University ofIowa where I studied non-profit agencies, their formation, maintenance, and purpose under the instruction of Sandy Boyd. This coursework piqued my interest in nonprofit organizations in the Iowa City area. As an attorney, I have served as an advocate for the elderly and Hispanic populations by volunteering my services and performing pro bono work. WHAT IS YOUR PRESENT KNOWLEDGE OF THIS ADVISORY BOARD? The Housing and Community Development Commission assesses the needs oflow to moderate-income Iowa City residents in need of assistance and then makes recommendations to the Council regarding how and whether to appropriate federal funds to programs and organizations to meet those needs. To perform this task, the HCDC keeps informed ofIowa City's changing needs. WHAT CONTRIBUTIONS DO YOU FEEL YOU CAN MAKE TO THIS ADVISORY BOARD - (OR STATE REASON FOR APPLYING)? As a result of my experience working with human services organizations, I am familiar with the needs of residents with low to moderate incomes and the limited resources local organizations have to meet those needs. I am also fully aware of the difficult task the HCDC has in discerning the appropriate allocation oflimited funds, I have time and energy to give to the HCDC and my background shows that my interests are aligned with those of the Commission's. 1'0 0 = = <>0 .c- o :s~ lJ r"~ --./ TI ) "'.
