As public service director and weekend news editor at KCJJ Radio, I have had the opportunity to work with non-profit groups and public organizations - including some previous work with the Mayor's Youth Employment Program. This work involves helping groups come up with ways to recruit volunteers and to raise money. As a voice on the radio, I have made it my number-one goal to educate the community about the opportunities to volunteer, to get involved, and to contribute monetarily. I have also worked with all the junior high and high schools county-wide, including some one-on-one work with students learning about the radio profession. My work in the Iowa Legislature as the assistant to Sate Representative Richard Myers, has provided me with extensive experience with not only the Human Services, Local Government and $ustiee System Committees, but also with the entire budgeting process; this knowledge also carries over into the grant writing process. One activity I am directly involved with in the legislature involves working with high school students. Coordinating with Gordon Mixdoff and Gary Neuzil at West High School and Dale Hibbs at City High, we have students come to the Capitol where they spend a week leanting about the legislative process. It is my job to educate and to give the students hands-on working experience in the multi-faceted environment of state government. I also debate with the students on current issues and we generate lists of how to make state government better. I know I have the ability to work with and under~tand our younger citizens -maybe it is because it was only seven years ago that I graduated from City High. My legislative job, which takes place during the weekdays, will be completed in April - so it will not interfere with the time frame of this appointment. Just recently, I completed my first voluntary work with a dty commission, and that was being on the public safety committee for the "Iowa City: Beyond 2000" project. This gave me some inside experience of how a city board operates. I took my responsibility seriously, contributing to the discussions and never missing a meeting - I will do my best to do the same as a member of the Mayor's Youth Employment Board. I believe my community involvement, my communication skills, my ability to work with students and my connections I have made by working with non-profit groups and public organizations in Johnson County and statewide, will enable me to help generate new and innovative job opportunities for the disadvantaged you,th we will be worl~n~.g wi~. I also understand the power of the buck, and know how to r',use money. I knov~ hav ~e~he riffle and energy to take on this challenge of making the lives or our younge~.'_rt~ze~. a ~.h~ better - hoping that their experience with the Mayor's Youth Employmedl~prog~am give them some of the job skills necessary to carry them into the f~ture.r-:,2 ~' ;"'-' -.t
