THE CITY COUNCIL OF IOWA CITY IS CON-
SIDERING AN APPOINTMENT TO THE FOL-
LOWING BOARD:
CITY OF I0 WA CITY
BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT
One vacancy - Six months plus 5-year term
June 27, 1995 - January 1, 2001
Duiies: In appropriate cases and subject to
appropriate conditions and safeguards, make
special exceptions to the terms of the ordinanc-
es in harmony with general purpose and intent
and in accordance with general or specific rules
therein contained and provided that any property
owner aggrieved by the action of the Council in
the adoption of such regulations and restrictions
may petition the said Board of Adjustment
directly or modi~ regulations and restrictions as
applied to such property owners. It can only act
pursuant to the zoning ordinance. It has no
power to act upon any ordinances other than the
zoning ordinance. it cannot grant a variance
unless specific statutory authority provides for
granting a variance. Variances granted under
Iowa Code, Chapter 414.12(3) and Iowa City
Municipal Code A-8.10.28H l(d) may only be
granted in the case of "unnecessary hardship."
The hardship must be substantial, serious, real,
and of compe[ling force, as distinguished from
reasons of convenience, maximization of profit
or caprice.
Iowa City a~'pointed members of boards and
commissions must be eligible electors of the
City of Iowa City. The Board of Adjustment
meets the second Wednesday of each month at
4:30 p.m.
This appointment will be made at the June 27,
1995, meeting of the City Council at 7:30 p.m. in
the Council Chambers. The City of Iowa City
encourages diversity in the appointment of
citizens to boards and commissions. Persons
interested in being considered for this position
should contact the City Clerk at the Civic Cen-
ter, 410 E. Washington Street. Application
forms are available from the Clerk's office upon
request.

HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION
One vacancy - Unexpired term
June 27, 1995 - January 1, 1998
The duties of the members of the Human
Rights Commission are to provide for the gener-
al welfare of the citizens of Iowa City by study-
ing the relationships of people of various races,
colors, creeds, religions, nationalities, sexes and
ancestries living within the community. To
provide pmcedurss for the operation of said
Commission to eliminate prejudice, intolerance,
bigotry and discrimination in the City of Iowa
City, Iowa, by declaring discriminatory practices
in the areas of public accommodations, employ-
ment and the leasing, sale, financing or showing
of real property to be against public policy and
to provide procedures for the investigation of
complaints and conciliation and to provide for
enforcement.
Iowa City appointed members of boards and
commissions must be eligible electore of the
City of Iowa City. The Human Rights Commis-
sion meets the fourth Monday of each month at
7 p.m.
This appointment will be made at the June 27,
1995, meeting of the City Council at 7:30 p.m. in
the Council Chambers. The City of Iowa City
