HomeMy WebLinkAbout2005-03-01 Proclamation City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, Special Olympians have a strong desire to compete and win; and Whereas, Special Olympians know that bravery is measured in setting goals and attempting to reach them; and Whereas, Special Olympians recognize the joy, pride and self-worth, humility and disappointment, inherent in organized competition; and Whereas, Special Olympians appreciate the benefits that healthy competition and physical activity can bring; and Whereas, Special Olympians give the entire community a chance to gather and share in their spirit of accomplishment; Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the month of March 2005 to be Special Olympics Month in the City of Iowa City and urge all citizens to commend and support the activities of the Special Olympics. /~ . These services are available to individuals regardless o£th¢ir race, education, income, or political persuasion; and Whereas, disaster victims depend on emotional and physical support fi-om the Red Cross to help them with vouchers to pay £or food, clothing, lodging, critical household goods, and other emergency articles and services; and Whereas, t~¢ Grant Wood Area Chapter helps save lives by teaching Iowa City residents disaster prevention and preparedness measures; and Whereas, the American Red Cross serves as a communications link between service members and their loved ones. Last fiscal year, chapter caseworkers h¢lped relay emergency communications -news o£births, deaths, and serious illness- to 434 eastern Iowa military service members and their £amilies; and WheI'efls, the Grant Wood Area Chapter provides Iowa City residents with opportunities to participate in international relie£ efforts in countries around the world; and Wherefls, Iowa City residents learn vital lifesaving skills, including CPR and first aid, under the tutelage o£ dedicated Red Cross instructors; and Wherefls, Iowa City youth have learned the facts about HIV and AIDS, including prevention measures, through the dedicated efforts o£ Red Cross HIV/A[DS educators. Now, therefore, i, Ernest W. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, International Women's Day, March 8, is observed throughout the world as a day when women on all continents come together to focus on women's lives and the straggle for full human rights; and Whereas, more than one-half of the world's population is female, women perform two thirds of the world's work, and women represent over three-fifths of the world's illiterate population; and Whereas, the City of Iowa City was the second city in the United States to have a resolution calling for the United States to pass CEDAW, the 1979 United Nations' Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women; and Whereas, one of the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals to be achieved by 2015 is to "empower women and promote equality between women and men;" Whereas, this is a time to reflect on women's progress and celebrate women's cultural differences and similarities, especially in the war-tom Middle East where they are suffering from political turmoil and conflict; Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lelanan, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim the month of March 2005 to be International Women's Month in Iowa City, and I urge our citizens to join me in the educational activities and celebrations during International Women's Month, as well as to reflect on how our personal lives and organizations to which we belong can participate in the educational understanding of our populations around the world.
