HomeMy WebLinkAbout2005-03-22 Proclamation City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa and the citizens of Iowa City have a distinguished tradition of providing safe haven and hospitality to writers from around the world; and Whereas, the International Writing Program has brought to Iowa City--the "Athens of the Midwest"--more than 1,000 writers from 120 countries to develop a community of writing without borders, enhancing international understanding; and Whereas, the University of Iowa has a historic and ongoing commitment to creative writing, with the fruits of the Writers Workshop on display in bookstores everywhere and the community forged by the International Writing Program extending to every corner of the planet, turning Iowa City into a beacon of hope to oppressed writers; and . Whereas, the International Writing Program in affiliation with the North American Network of Cities of Asylum will provide temporary sanctuary to a writer under threat of extreme persecution or death; and Whereas, Iowa City will be the fifth city to join the North American Network of Cities of Asylum; and Whereas, the International Writing Program and the University of Iowa have such a strong commitment to this program that they will assume administrative oversight and financial responsibility for a writer at risk housed here under the auspices of the North American Network of Cities of Asylum; and Whereas, the citizens of Iowa City, who maintain close ties to the writers who visit here from every land, are encoaraged to welcome the writer at risk into this community; Now, Therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim that Iowa City joins the North American Network of Cities of Asylum to provide safe haven for writers at risk. Mayor Signed in Iowa City, Iowa, this 22® day of March, 2005 I City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, Mark Twain Elementary opened for the 1954-55 school year. When it opened Mark Twain served Kindergarten through third grade. There were 5 teachers, 151 students, and 118 families. The population of Iowa City at the time was 27,212; and Whereas, after two additions Twain now serves Preschool through sixth grade. There are 50 staff members, 311 students, and 273 families. Mark Twain is one of the most diverse schools in the Iowa City Community School district. Mark Twain has many successful former students. Some of the professions of former students are teachers, nurses, police officers, business owners, and even 2 NFL players; and Whereas, an open house commemorating Mark Twain Elementary's fiftieth Anniversary is planned for Thursday evening, March 31, from 7:00-8:30 PM, and encourage current and former students and staff to attend; Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim Thursday, March 31, 2005 as Mark Twain Elementary Day In Iowa City and encourage participation in activities planned on this day.
