There are a growing number of High School students living West of Mormon Trek and we are in desperate need of public transportation. As you are most likely aware, many of the residents in the Southwest Estates subdivision in particular are just shy of the mandated three- mile distance from the high school to warrant school bus transportation. I have inquired about the possibility of paying for school bus transportation, but I have been informed that this is not an option for our neighborhood. I feel that a six-mile round-trip to and from school, with book bags and musical instruments, places quite a burden on students. I do not look forward to being placed in a position where my child may need to ride to and from school with a possibly young and inexperienced driver. Although I take full responsibility for my personal circumstances, as a single parent working full-time outside the home, arranging school transportation based on the pre~determined school day is very difficult. I have learned of the availability of an East Side City Bus Loop to help alleviate this problem on the East Side of town. I am writing to encourage the City to investigate the feasibility of offering a West Side City Bus Loop as soon as possible. I appreciate your attention to this matter. Sincerely, Hazel Kerr 73 Durango Place Iowa City, IA 52246 July 27, 1998 828 Fairway Ln. SE Iowa City, IA 52240 .!i",C JUL 2 9 1998 To Iowa City City Council: In the Press Citizen I noticed that you would welcome any suggestions for the downtown renewal project, including fountain ideas. I would like to suggest that you, or at least a representative of your group, take a tour to the small town of Sigourney to see their fountain. It has been in operation since I was a little girl some 40 years ago. I'm sure there has been maintenance required, but it is still a beautiful fountain. Simple, yet lovely to watch. It is round in shape and when the water jets upward it has varying heights. In the evening there is lighting that makes the water appear to be colored, changing into several different colors. The fountain is also protected so small children won't be tempted to climb into it. Several years ago when I heard Iowa City was going to have a fountain I had visions of a fountain similar to Sigourney's. I was really disappointed when I saw what it turned out to be. So many people have made remarks about how unusual the fountain is, so I am hoping more people will make suggestions and we can have something beautiful. If you need to reach me by phone my daytime # is 319-337-1306 and my evening # is 319- 351-2530. Thank you for listening. Sincerely, Carolyn Robertson July 29, 1998 IO ES TI VAL Mr. Ernie Lehman City of Iowa City 410 E. Washington St. Iowa City, IA 52240 Dear Ernie: We recently received a check from the City of Iowa City to support the Iowa Arts Festival and I am writing on behalf of the entire organization to thank you and the City Council for your support. Despite the recurring June rains, the 1998 Arts Festival was an enormous success. We had more people attend each day, with the exception of Sunday which was rainy all day. However, even then, all our events went off inside the Public Library and we gave away thousands ofgoodie bags, so we know huge numbers of families braved the weather. People loved the 1998 Festival design and we sold every shirt we printed and many posters, because as people kept telling us, "it's so Iowa City!" As an organization we have spent a great deal of time trying to improve our financial position and planning to expand the Arts Festival so it becomes a major regional event drawing people from throughout the Midwest to downtown Iowa City. In a short time, we will be sending you a plan for the 1999 Iowa Arts Festival which will include an exciting expansion. In the meantime, we want you to know how crucial the City's support is to our event '- we truly could not do it without your support. We thank you for your encouragement, and for giving us the ability to present a first-rate event to the thousands of people who attend the iowa Arts Festival. Our many thanks! Unless directed otherwise by the City Council, this action will occur on or shortly after August 12, 1998. Action Pursuant to Section 9-1-3A(8) of the City Code, signage and pavement markings will be installed indicating the right lane of Rocky Shore Drive at the intersection of U.S. 6 must turn right and the left lane will be used for left turning and through traffic. Comment This action is being taken to allow greater efficiency for southbound traffic turning right at this intersection. In the lane for right turn only, a protected green arrow can be given for right turns while U.S. 6 traffic has protected left turn arrows. These changes will reduce delays for right turners without having considerable negative impacts on left and through movements. jw/mern/dr-rocky.doc July 22, 1998 CITY OF I0WA CITY TO: The Honorable Mayor and the City Council Civil Service Entrance Examination - COMMUNITY PROGRAMMER We, the undersigned members of the Civil Service Commission of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby certify the following named person(s) as eligible for the position of Community Programmer.
