PROCLAMATION
Whereas, the strength of our nation, and all o£its states and cities, flows from the
promise of individual equality and freedom of choice; and
Whereas, April 2005 is the 37t~ anniversary o£the passage o£ Title VIII of the Civil
Rights Act of 1968, as amended, better known as the "Fair Housing Act", which
declares that discrimination in the sale, rental or financing of housing based on
race, color, religion, sex, national origin, familial status or handicap is unlawful;
and
Whereas, shelter is a basic human need, and the quality of human life is greatly
diminished when people suffer discrimination because of such irrelevant factors
as their race, color, religion, sex, national origin, familial status, or handicap-
making it essential that America, the State of Iowa and the City of Iowa City be
rededicated to the policy that housing be available to all persons on the basis of
equality and fairness; and
Whereas, the Iowa City Municipal Ordinance, Title 2, prohibits discrimination in
housing based on all the reasons listed above as well as age, sexual orientation,
gender identity, marital status, presence or absence of dependents or public
assistance source of income.
Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do
hereby proclaim the month of April 2005 to be
Fair Housing Month
in Iowa City and urge all citizens to support and endorse the practice and policy of fair
housing and reaffirm the commitment to fair housing opportunities for all.

WHEREAS, millions of volunteers working in their communities utilize their time and
talent daily to make a real difference in the lives of children and adults; and
WHEREAS, the entire community can effect positive change with any volunteer
action, big or small; and
WHEREAS, volunteers can connect with local community service opportunities
through hundreds of community service organizations, like the Volunteer Administrator's
Network; and
WHEREAS, during this week, all over the nation, service projects will be performed
and volunteers will be recognized for their commitment to community service; and
WHEREAS, volunteers are vital to our future as a caring and productive nation.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City,
Iowa, do hereby proclaim April 17-23, 2005 to be
VOLUNTEER WEEK
in Iowa City, and urge citizens to contribute to their community.

Whereas, the coming of Spring produces a renewal of interest in tree
planting for beauty, shade, conservation, and many other purposes
beneficial to all people, and
Whereas, the observation of Arbor Day has long been characterized by the
planting and preservation of trees, and
Whereas, we hope that the future will see the creation of a better
environment through the use of trees throughout our cities, towns and
countryside.
Whereas, trees in Iowa City beautify our community, increase property
values, and enhance the economic vitality of business areas,
Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City,
Iowa, do hereby proclaim Friday, April 29, 2005, to be
Arbor Day
in Iowa City, and I hereby urge all citizens to participate in tree planting and
preservation projects throughout the year.

GLOBAL LOVE DAY to facilitate in establishing LOVE & PEACE on our planet;

PROCLAMATION
Whereas, 45 million Americans, equal to the combined population of 24 states, do not have
health care coverage;
Whereas, eight out of 10 people who are uninsured are in working families;
Whereas, there are more than 8 million children in America without health coverage;
Whereas, uninsured Americans live sicker and die younger than those who are covered, and
suffer needlessly because they go without the health care they need;
Whereas, the price of health care continues to rise, and fewer individuals and families can
afford to pay for coverage and fewer small businesses are able to provide coverage for their
employees;
Whereas, we recognize the urgency of seeking solutions to one of America's greatest
problems,
Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby
proclaim May 1-8, 2005 as
