PROCLAMATION
Whereas, th~ Johnson County Crisis Center has provided emotional and material support in
a compassionate, nonjudgmcntal and caring environment and will ¢¢lebrate 35 successful
years of extensive community involvement through the Crisis Intervention Program,
Food Bank, Information and Referral, Suicide Prevention and Intervention, Emergency
Assistance and Transient and Referral Services; and
Whereas, through 250 trained volunteers, the Crisis Center has provided 24-hour support
and referrals to over 7,000 contacts in the crisis intervention program for people wanting
support for depression, relationship issues and suicide concerns, including suicides in
progress; and
Whereas, understanding that individual and family economic hardship can lead to hunger
and the uncertainty of where one's next meal will originate, the Crisis Center's food bank
offers to 4,000 households annually a balanced nutritional meal; and
Whereas, the success of the Crisis Center reaches beyond Johnson County, providing
transient services to over 1,000 stranded households in the area through parmerships with
other community groups, the Crisis Center assists with transportation, food and clothing;
and
Whereas, the Johnson County Crisis Center depends on funding from United Way
allocations, grants, private donations from individuals, churches, and groups, fundraising
activities, the cities of Iowa City and Coralville, and Johnson County to support the
fulfillment of its mission and services.
Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, do hereby
proclaim Saturday, July 30, 2005 as
The 35th Anniversary Celebration Of The
Johnson County Crisis Center
and invite supporters to attend the anniversary celebration at the Thanksgiving in July Food Drive
at Iowa City Lower City Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 30th.
