HomeMy WebLinkAbout1999-09-14 Proclamation(.eit of Jgwa ~][~erea~, in our society, one in three women and one in six men will experience sexual abuse in their lifetime and violence against women and children continues to escalate; and ~][~ere~iEi, during fiscal year 1999, the Rape Victim Advocacy Program provided services to 550 sexual abuse survivors and significant others; and ~[~ere~ifil, sexual abuse affects every person in our community as a victim/survivor, or as a family member, friend, partner, co- worker, or neighbor concerned for someone who has experienced abuse; and ]~[~ereRB, it is critical to intensify public awareness of sexual abuse, community prevention of sexual abuse, and support for agencies providing sexual abuse services. t~ereft~re, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim September 23, 1999, to be exuat A autt Signed in Iowa City, Iowa, this 14m day of September, 1999. in Iowa City and encourage all citizens to promote a community free from sexual abuse. ~l~][~ere~t~ our founding fathers, in order to secure the blessings of liberty for themselves and their posterity, did ordain and establish a Constitution for the United States of America, and ]~[~ere~t~ it is of the greatest importance that all citizens fully understand the provisions and principles contained in the Constitution in order to effectively support, preserve and defend it against all enemies; and ~][~eFe~tFt, the two hundred eleventh anniversary of the signing of the Constitution provides an historic opportunity for all Americans to remember the achievements of the Framers of the Constitution, and the rights, privileges, and responsibilities afforded to us in this unique document; and ~][~ere~tFt, the independence guaranteed to American citizens, whether by birth or naturalization, should be remembered, in Iowa City and urge all citizens to reflect during that week on the many benefits of our Federal Constitution and the privileges and responsibilities of American citizenship.
