cancer and 600 will die from the disease, and

lives; however, research shows that only a small percentage of
women in Iowa are getting screening mammograms ,n accordance
with nationally-accepted guidelines, and
t ttFereas, the American Cancer Society recommends screening for
breast cancer including a routine mammography, examination by a
physician, and monthly breast self-examination.

Dear Councilors,
The celebration. oF Community Reading Month in Iowa City gets off to an early start this
fall with the second annual Teen Read Week October 17-23. This reading promotion is an
initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) of the American
Library Association ALA). I had the honor to sexwe last year as President of
YALSA during the first Ten Read Week and was gladdened by hundreds of examples of
outstanding programs and activities designed to encourage and support teens who mad
This year' s theme is "Read for the fun of it!" This theme acknowledges the fact that teens
today are busy, committed people who sometimes find that the demands on their time for
school work, extra- and co-curricular activities, jobs, family, etc. leaves them little time to
read for plca~sure.
Celebrity spokespeople for Teen Read Week inclucle Michelle Kwan (figure skater),
Rebecca Lobo (basketball player) and Tim Dwight ('hough said.)
At the October meeting of the Iowa City Council I will ask Mayor Lehman to sign a
resolution declaring October 17-23 Teen Read Week in Iowa City. I would 'also invite each
of you to visit South East Junior High to see our library and to meet the teachers and staff
who work together m promote teen reading all year long.
