Riverfront and Natural Areas Commission
Sept 31, 1999
Experience and/or activities that you feel qualify you for this position.
I hold a minor in Biology and advanced degrees in Exercise Physiology and
Community Health. I have worked in botanical laboratories and am well grounded in
ecological principles. I am also an amateur naturalist and avid flatwater kayaker, who for
the past 17 years, has used the open areas within Johnson County for recreation. I am
applying for the Riverfront and Natural Areas Commission because I am interested in
preservation and restoration of natural areas, particularly wetlands. I am also interested
in giving something back to our community in the form of public service.
What is your present knowledge of this advisory board?
My present knowledge of the Riverfront and Natural Areas Commission is limited,
although, I read the Parks and Recreation Minutes which references their work and I am
familiar with our local trails and Iowa River boat ramps.
What contributions do you feel you can make to this advisory board.
My research area is health promotion epidemiology. I specialize in measuring
and understanding determinants of physical activity within communities. What I have
discovered in my work is that one of the more consistent and important determinants of
physical activity is open space, particularly motor-vehicle-free green space and trails.
My understanding of how open space improves human health might help the
commission pursue state and federal funds directed toward community health. I also
have a strong background in education and am willing to work with other commission
members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate community-wide environmental
education projects.
