HomeMy WebLinkAbout1999-10-19 Proclamation/& ]]][~l~rl~a~i~ somewhere in the United States, a residential fire occurs about every 66 seconds resultin in approximately 3,000 deaths, 50,000- 100,000 injuries and $3.1 billion damage to homes; and ~t[}l~rl~ts, about 88 percent of American homes have smoke detectors; however, nearly one-third do not work because of worn or missing batteries; and ]~l[~l~rl~t~i, smoke detector maintenance is one of the simplest, most effective ways to help reduce home fire deaths and injuries, effectively cutting the risk of dying in a home fire by nearly half by providing an early warning and critical extra seconds to escape; and ]~l[~l~rl~t~, the designation of a special day to remind residents of Iowa City to change the batteries in their smoke detectors, timed to coincide with the fall ritual of changing clocks, would greatly diminish the chance of this tragedy occurring ~n Iowa City; and ]]][~l~rl~a~, October 31, 1999, is the day Americans change their clocks from daylight savings time to standard t~me; t~.erl~fllrl~, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do ereby proclaim the day of October 25, 1998, to be "(gl ange nnr · l ange nnr atter " in Iowa City and urge all residents to change their smoke detector batteries and to instail smoke detectors if they don't have them.
