Mayor Emie Lehman, Members Iowa City City Council
Karin Franklin, Department of City Planning and Community Development
Fellow members of the Iowa City Public Art Advisory Committee
I appreciate having had the opportunity to serve on the Iowa City Public Art Advisory
Committee. During the past two years, I have been privileged to participate in our
democratic process by serving on this advisory committee. So, it is with regret that I feel
I must resign due to my travel schedule in the year 2000. (We have 11 trips scheduled
between January - November). Already this year I have missed some meetings due to
travel, and the loss is mine.
Working with Karin Franklin, Rick Fosse, David Schoon, Terry Trueblood and Joyce
Carol who serve as staff members and/or ad hoe advisors to the committee, has shown me
the extent to which truly caring '~ublic servants" will go to fairly and thought~xlly
respond to the various voices in the community. The committee members with whom I
have served, Kevin I-Ianick (who had to resign recently due to a conflict of interest),
Nancy Pu~ngton, Gary Nagle, Emily Vetmillion and Sandra Hudson are committed,
competent and tim. Yes, even in our most complex deliberations, there has always been
a sense of commitment - and and element of fun.
I believe our committee made very good progress over the past two years in laying down
the ground roles - the mission statement, by-laws, acquisition procedures, calls to artists
and so forth - and in developing and implementing our first project, the Weatherdance
Fountain, (despite its well-publicized drainage problems, which will be corrected). Also,
in turning down the respondants to our first "call to artists" for the five sculpture pads in
the City Plaza Pedestrian Mall when most of the proposed artwork did not fit our criteria.
I believe this showed the integrity of the committee. Currently, the literary walk project
is on the drawing board, and promises to be a tribute to the literary greats who have
walked the streets of Iowa City -- something we can all be proud of.
To the City Council, thank you for the outstanding support you have provided the Public
Art Advisory Committee and the appreciation you have demonstrated toward public art
as a viable and necessary addition to our urban landscape. To the Council and the
committee, I shall miss working with you and hope to be asked to assist whenever
volunteers are needed. Thank you for the privilege of working with you.
Sincerely,
Deborah L. Galbraith
