13,000 members of the pla~ing profession in ~erica, a component of the
30,000-member ~erican Plying Association, endorses WO~D TO~
PLA~G DAY as an oppoffuni~ to highli~t the contributions sound plying
m~es to the quali~ of our seffiements ~d enviroment ~d to celebrate ~eric~
accomplis~ents in making collective decisions concerning our cities and regions
that bring quali~ and me~ing to our lives; and
~ereRB, ~e celebration of WO~D TO~ PLUG DAY gives us the
oppo~uni~ to publicly reco~ize the pmicipation ~d dedication of the members
of plying co~issions and o~er citizen pla~ers who have contributed their
time and expe~ise to the improvement of the Ci~; and

every 85 seconds resulting in approximately 3,000 deaths, 50,000-
100,000 injuries and $3.1 billion damage to homes; and
i[llll~rl~lltL about 94 percent of American homes have smoke detectors;
however, nearly one-third do not work because of wom or missing
batteries; and
ways to help reduce home fire deaths and
risk of dying in a home fire by nearly half by providing an early waming
and critical extra seconds to escape; and
i~l[~l~rl~,lll[, the designation of a special day to remind residents of Iowa City to
change the batteries in their smoke detectors, timed to coincide with the
fall ntual of changing clocks, would greatly diminish the chance of this
tragedy occurring in Iowa City; and
i[llll~l~r~lll, this year, October 29 is the day Americans change their clocks from daylight savings time to standard time;
