HomeMy WebLinkAbout2000-11-07 Proclamation:~tlll~l~rl~lllt, Alpha Phi Omega--the nation's largest service fraternity--will participate in National Service Week, an event that the Fraternity has sponsored annually since 1979; and :~ll~l~relllt, this year's emphasis for National Service Week is Nurturing the Leaders of the Twenty-first Century, and Alpha Phi Omega chapters will be working to develop projects which will celebrate, promote, encourage and challenge the youth of our community and nation to be the very best they can be as they will be our future leaders; and :~lI~l~rl~Hlt, Alpha Phi Omega members seek to introduce volunteerism to individuals who might not otherwise become involved in paying tribute to those who gave so much in the past to make our lives better today; and :~l~l~rl?lllt, Alpha Phi Omega chapters at The University of Iowa will all work to promote these ideals and render service to their community. mu, riterefute, I, Emest W. ' // i11-07-00 KOREAN WAR VETERANS PROCLAMA 3b WHEREAS, on June 25, 1950, the North Korean Army, organized, equipped, and abetted by the Soviet Union, crossed the 38"' parallel and invaded South Korea intent on subjecting an independent people to communist dictatorship, and; WHEREAS, this flagrant violation of international law impelled the United States, along with 20 other United Nations member nations to join to repel communist aggression, and; WHEREAS, this marked the first time the United Nations authorized establishment of a multi-national force, flying the U.N. banner, to check aggression and restore peace, and; WHEREAS, the war ended in stalemate July 27, 1953, with an uneasy armistice and with some questioning the value of America's involvement, and; WHEREAS, those questions were answered four decades later when, in 1992, an independent, economically prosperous South Korean nation of 44 million stood proud and free in the world spotlight as host of the "greatest ever" Olympiad; and answered again shortly thereafter as the Soviet empire crumbled, along with its plan for world domination, and; ~. WHEREAS, veterans of the Korean War, we have not forgotten your ;-~...- sacrifice, or those of your loved ones and the comrades left behind. We ~' remember your dedication and courage at Puson, Inchon, the Chosin : Reservoir, Bloody Ridge, Heartbreak Hill, Pork Chop Hill, MIG Alley and · ~ throughout the Korean peninsula. Your service and your sacrifice :i showed the world that "FREEDOM IS NOT FREE." NOW, THEREFORE, I, Emie Lehman, Mayor of Iowa City, Iowa, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby officially proclaim that November 11, 2000, the 50"` anniversary year of the beginning of the Korean War, be know as: KOREAN WAR VETERANS REMEMBRANCE DAY to be celebrated by all citizens of Iowa City and do encourage partilcipation in related events recognizing our veterans of the Korean War.
