Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim December 1, 2000, as in Iowa City. Mayor _ Signed in Iowa City, Iowa, _ this 21st day of November, 2000. \\ Will you ma.ke a difference? World AIDS Day Friday, December 1, 2000 What is World AIDS Day? Each year, on December ::tst, the world observes World AIDS Day. This is the time of year that we join together to strengthen our global effort to face the challenges of the AIDS pandemic. This year's theme is AZDS: Will you make a difference? We are calling on you~ the community, to make a differ- ence. You can do this in several ways. First and foremost, work to increase awareness of the magnitude of the H]:V / AIDS epidemic. Despite new treatments in medications, there is no cure for AIDS. There have been an estimated :t8.8 million AIDS related deaths globally since the begin- ning of the epidemic. Second, show your support for those living with HIV and AIDS. Wear a red ribbon on December 1st and everyday as a constant reminder of the many people suffering as a re- sult of this disease and the many people working toward a cure - a day without A:[DS. Finally, you can make a difference by supporting the events and the agencies listed in this guide to World AIDS Day. The most potent weapon against HIV is an educated and involved public. We have put together these events both to entertain and to educate you. This year, as we observe World AIDS Day 2000, we have the opportunity to work with the rest of the world to end the AIDS epidemic. Together we can truly make a difference. What is HAPi?
