Whereas, Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity celebrated the anniversary of its
dXganization in October, 2000 and observed a Celebration" on
Sanday, February 4th, 2001 in Iowa City; and

to eliminate poverty housing in surroanding area and around

Whereas, Iowa Valld~ Habitat works with and affluent people without

PROCLAMATION
Whereas, Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity celebrated the seventh anniversary of its
organization in October, 2000 and observed a "Habitation Celebration" on
Sunday, February 4tn, 2001 in Iowa City; and
Whereas, Iowa Valley Habitat is an ecumenical, Christian housing ministry that seeks
to eliminate poverty housing in Iowa City, the surrounding area and around
the world; and
Whereas, Iowa Valley Habita~ works with needy and affluent people without
consideration to race, creed, color or gender, in equal partnership to build
community and new housing through volunteer labor, management,
expertise and tax-deductible donations of money and materials so that
houses can be sold at no profit to partner families assuming no-interest
mortgages over a fixed period; and
Whereas, each homeowner family is required to invest "sweat equity" hours into the
construction of their own and their neighbor's home to reduce the cost of the
house, increase the pride of ownership among family members and to foster
the development of positive relationships with others; and
Whereas, Iowa Valley Habitat in the past seven years has completed 21 homes in the
greater Iowa City area and provided safe, decent housing for 67 children and
their adult family members; and
Whereas, Iowa Valley Habitat has provided safe, affordable housing in the greater
Iowa City area for families in need, we wish to join the volunteers,
professionals and contributors in recognizing their service to our community
and the surrounding area.
Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the week of February 4 to February 10, 2001, to be
