HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001-03-05 Proclamation City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas the Grant Wood Area Chapter of the American Red Cross provides vital services 365 days a year, to Iowa City residents regardless of their race, education, income or political persuasion; and Whereas, Iowa City disaster victims depend on emotional and physical support from the Red Cross to help them recover with vouchers to pay for food, clothing, lodging, critical household goods, and other emergency articles and services; and Whereas, the Grant Wood Area Chapter helps save lives by teaching Iowa City residents disaster prevention and preparedness measures; and Whereas~ Red Cross workers have helped Iowa City residents re- estabhsh communication with their loved ones after being separated from their family members in other countries by war, civil disturbance, natural disasters and other calamities; and Whereas, Iowa City residents learn vital lifesaving skills, including CPR and first aid, under the tutelage of dedicated Red Cross instructors; and Whereas, Iowa City youth have learned the facts about HIV and AIDS, including prevention measures, through the dedicated efforts of Red Cross HIV/AIDS educators. Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim the month of March 2001, as American Red Cross Month in Iowa City, and I urge our residents to join with me i~p~p. po~ American Red Cross. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, quality health care is vital for individuals involved in physical activity; and Whereas, certified athletic trainers (ATCs) have a long history of prox/iding quality health care for athletes and those engaged in physical activity based on specific tasks, knowledge and skills acquired through their nationally regulated educational processes; and Whereas, certified athletic trainers provide: prevention of injuries, recognition, evaluation and immediate care, rehabilitation, health care administration, and education and guidance; and Whereas, athletic training was recognized by the American Medical Association in 1990 as an allied health care profession; and Whereas, more than 20,000 certified athletic trainers nationwide are employed in the following settings: professional sports, colleges and universities, high schools, clinics and hospitals, and corporate and industrial settings; and Whereas, leading organizations concerned with athletic training and health care have joined together in a common desire to raise public awareness of the importance of the athletic training profession and to emphasize the importance of quality health care for athletes and those engaged in physical activity within the aforementioned settings; and Whereas, such an effort will improve health care for athletes and those engaged in physical activity and promote ATCs as allied health professionals. Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the month of March to be Athletic Traimng Month in Iowa City and urge our residents to learn more about the importance of athletic training. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, mental retardation is a condition that affects more than 8 million Americans and their families; and Whereas, public awareness and education enhance a community's understanding of the issues affecting people with mental retardation; and Whereas, people with mental retardation are vital, contributing members of the community, improving the quality of life for all of us; and Whereas, the month of March has been designated National Mental Retardation Awareness Month, with more than 1,000 chapters of The Arc undertaking public awareness, educational, and fundraising initiatives; and Whereas, The Arc is the nation's leading advocate for people with mental retardation and other disabilities and their families. Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim the month of March, 2001, as Mental Retardation Awareness Month in Iowa City and urge that the citizens of Iowa City offer full support toward efforts that allow people with mental retardation and her disabilities to live full and productive hves In our commumty ...~A~t..
