HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001-04-03 Proclamation City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the existence of Government Access Channels and their focus on the affairs of the local community are a crucial and vital asset to citizens, allowing them to become more familiar with the process of local government decision making and better equipped to participate in the process effectively; and Whereas, through Government Access Channel programming, a greater number of residents will discover the impact local policy affairs have in their daily lives; and Whereas, Government Access Channels are an important resource for participating in the local democratic policy and lawmaking processes; and Whereas, those who watch these televised meetings can better identify issues which require their active participation as citizens and as voters, and better informed citizens can make a difference to the benefit of their communities; and Whereas, if more citizens were aware of the ready availability of these meetings for viewing on local cable television, and of the potential impact these meetings have on their daily lives, more might "tune in" to watch and might do so more frequently. Now, therefore, I, Ernest W, Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the week of April 2-6 to be The Great City Hall Tune-In in Iowa City and urge all citizens to promote awareness of televised City Council meetings on the City Channel and "tune-in" to these meetings throughout the week and throughout the year. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, there are more than 265,000 laboratory personnel, including pathologists, medical technologists, medical laboratory scientists, specialists, and technicians at work in almost 40,000 hospitals and independent laboratories in the United States; and Whereas, these highly trained and dedicated health professionals make an invaluable contribution to quality health care and save countless lives each day by providing reliable laboratory test results required for the prevention, detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disease; and Whereas, laboratory medicine is an honorable profession which should be recognized by all individuals as vital to the high standards of health care enjoyed in the United States. I - City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the month of April marks the 33rd anniversary of the signing of the Fair Housing Act. This Act, as amended, prohibits discrimination against individuals on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status or national origin in the sale, rental, or advertising of dwellings, in the provision of brokerage services, or in the availability of residential real estate-related transactions; and Whereas, the denial of equal housing opportunity is one of the most serious challenges a community can face. It is a challenge that must be met and surmounted lest it erode the vital social structure that holds a community together and gives it shape and dimension. The need for shelter is an essential human need. The right to freely choose a place to live is a basic human right and discrimination in housing not only is against the law, it is contrary to our sense of what our country should mean to us and to others; and Whereas, there are voluntary programs in support of fair housing that we as concerned citizens can join and support at every level in our community and in our jobs. There are personal and professional attitudes that we can and must change.
