HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001-05-01 Proclamation City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the Crisis Center has provided invaluable services to our community since 1970 and will conduct Crisis Center Week April 30- May 6, 2001, to observe the 3 1st anniversary of service to the community; and Whereas, Crisis Center services touch the lives of many people of all ages and backgrounds through short-term counseling, suicide prevention, intervention and post-vention, information and referral, Food Bank, clothing assistance, Project Holiday, transient transportation assistance, and communlty education; and Whereas, the Crisis Center provided more than 69,000 services to over 16,199 Johnson County residents during 2000 through the efforts of 150 dedicated volunteers from the community; and Whereas, it is fitting that we take notice of and express appreciation for the efforts of the Crisis Center volunteers and staff. Now, therefore, I, Emest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the week of April 30-May 6, 2001, to be Crisis Center Week in Iowa City, and ask all citizens to support the Crisis Center and encourage people in need to turn to the Crisis Center for assistance. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, The Ronald McDonald House is an organization that has a mission to provide a "Home Away from Home" for families with children age newborn to 18 dealing with severe health conditions; and Whereas, families of all backgrounds are given a warm atmosphere to stay, while the children of these families receive treatments at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics; and Whereas, the Ronald McDonald House is highly regarded in the Iowa City/Coralville area, providing the annual Walk/Run event for the house with great support from volunteers and donators in the surrounding areas. Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim May 2-7, 2001, to be The Ronald McDonald House Week in Iowa City. '! 05-01-01 2c City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, The National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Iowa City Historic Preservation Commission are co-sponsoring Historic Preservation Week; and Whereas historic preservation gives Americans a deeper understanding of their richly diverse architectural and cultural heritage; and Whereas, historic preservation promotes local community pride in America's towns, cities and rural areas; and Whereas, Iowa City has many historically and architecturally significant neighborhoods, homes, commercial buildings, and public structures, which contribute to the quality of our life; and Whereas, it is important to protect and preserve our city's historic resources for the use and enjoyment of current and future citizens; and Whereas, Historic Preservation Week provides an opportunity for all Iowa Citians to celebrate our community's historic treasures; Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim May 13-19, 2001, to be Historic Preservation Week in Iowa City and call upon the people of Iowa City to recognize and participate in this special observance. City of Iowa City I PROCLAMATION Whereas, the Congress and President of the United States have designated May 15 as Peace Officers' Memorial Day, and the week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week; and Whereas, the members of the Iowa City Police Department play an essential role in safeguarding rights and freedoms; and Whereas, it is important that all citizens know and understand the duties, responsibilities, hazards, and sacrifices of Iowa City Police, and that members of our Police Department recognize their duty to serve the people by safeguarding life and property, by protecting them against violence and disorder, and by protecting the innocent against deception and the weak against oppression; and Whereas, the men and women of the Iowa City Police Department unceasingly provide a vital public service. Now, therefore, I, Emest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, call upon citizens of the City of Iowa City to observe the week of May 13-19, 2001 as Police Week with appropriate ceremonies and observances. I further call upon all citizens of the City of Iowa City to observe May 15, 2001, as Peace Officers' Memorial Day in honor of those law enforcement officers who, through their courageous deeds, have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their community or have become disabled in the performance of duty, and let us recognize and pay respect to the survivors of our fallen heroes.
