and Leanne Jacobs were passing by 1023 Highland Avenue in their
vehicle when they noticed fire in the window closest to the front door.
Leanne called 911 using her cell phone while Marry went to the front
door and attempted to make contact with someone inside. Marty
said there appeared to be a small fire under the window inside the
living room. He then ran around to the rear of the house to the back
door where he again attempted to contact someone inside. At about
that time, Robert Rogers awoke to the noise. He was asleep in the
upstairs bedroom next to the living room. Rogers stated that he
opened his bedroom door to find the hallway filled with smoke.
Rogers then ran down the hall to a back bedroom where he crawled
out the window and met up with Marty Jacobs in the back yard. Also
at this time, there were six children in the basement playing video
games. One of the children (Sandra Rogers) came upstairs when
she heard Marry Jacobs banging on the back door. She opened the
door at the top of the stairs and was met with heavy smoke. Sandra
Rogers yelled down the stairs for the other children to come upstairs
and to follow the sound of her voice. Mr. Rogers entered the house
at this time through the back door and went downstairs to retrieve
the five children. Conditions worsened and Mr. Rogers was unable
to get back up the stairs to the exit. He then led the children over to
where the washer and dryer are located in the basement and
opened a small window approximately two foot wide by one foot
wide. By standing on the washer, he was able to pass the children
out the window to Mr. Jacobs and Sandra Rogers. Mr. Rogers was
then able to get himself out the same way.
