PROCLAMATION
Whereas, con~unity Development programs provide local governments with
resources, such as the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and
HOME Investment Partnership (HOME) programs, to meet the needs of low- and
moderate-income persons; and
Whereas, CDBG and HOME monies are used by thousands of neighborhood-based,
non-profit organizations throughout the nation to address pressing neighborhood
and human service needs; and
Whereas, Iowa City, Iowa recognizes and encourages homeownership and the
importance of local partners in increasing housing opportunities and building our
community; and
Whereas, Community Development activities have had a significant impact on our
local economies through job creation and retention, physical redevelopment and
improved local tax bases; and
Whereas, Iowa City, Iowa and other local governments have clearly demonstrated the
capacity to administer and customize the CDBG and HOME programs to identify,
prioritize and resolve pressing local problems, such as affordable housing,
neighborhood and human service needs, job creation and retention and physical
redevelopment; and
Now, Therefore I, Ernest W. Lehman, by virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim June 1, 2001, as
Community Development Day
in Iowa City, Iowa, and urge all citizens to join us in recognizing the important roles the

Whereas, people with mental retardation, other developmental disabilities and
families have the right to live, work, recreate, socialize and be
educated in the community; and
Whereas, Systems Unlimited, Inc. exists to empower people with disabilities and families to achieve their highest potential and quality of life; and
Whereas, Systems Unlimited, Inc. has been a leader in preventing the
institutionalization and assisting with the deinstitutionalization of people
with disabilities through its provision of supported living, employment,
in-home, respite, family therapy, home studies and family supervision
services; and
Whereas, June 3, 2001, will mark the 30th anniversary for Systems Unlimited, Inc.; and
Whereas, the City of Iowa City wishes to express its appreciation and support
for the quality/cost effective supports and services provided by Systems
Unlimited, Inc.
Now, therefore, I, Ernest W, Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City,
Iowa, do hereby proclaim June 3 through Jane 9, 2001, to be
SYSTEMS UNLIMITED WEEK
and urge all citizens to be aware of and support the mission and services provided
by Systems Unlimited, Inc.

PROCLAMATION
Whereas, the City of Iowa City and its citizens are desirous to discover and
protect the history and heritage of our City; and
Whereas, in 1856, over 2000 Mormon pioneers arrived in Iowa City and
camped on the banks of Clear Creek for periods of 2 months to a year, interacting
with, working for, and gaining help from the people of Iowa City; and
Whereas, these pioneers, with the help of Iowa City residents, built wooden
handcarts to carry their possessions on a historic 1500-mile trek to the Rocky
Mountains, many losing their lives in the process; and
Whereas, these events were the original impetus for the organization of a
Johnson County Historical Society and have been commemorated and
memorialized by the naming of Mormon Trek Boulevard in Iowa City and
Coralville and by the designation of the Mormon Handcart Park historical site by
The University of Iowa; and
Whereas, the 3rd Annual Mormon Trek Heritage Festival is being held on
Saturday, June 9, 2001, at the Hawkeye Intramural Fields on The University of
Iowa campus and will commemorate the Mormon Handcart Pioneers and their
contribution to Iowa City's heritage.
Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City do
hereby proclaim Saturday, June 9, 2001, to be
Mormon Pioneer Day
in Iowa City and invite all citizens to join me in the ' ' .
