HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001-09-11 Proclamation City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, in our society, one of three women and one in six men will experience sexual abuse in their lifetime and violence against women and children continues to escalate; and Whereas, during fiscal year 2000, the Rape Victim Advocacy Program provided services to 629 sexual abuse survivors and significant others; and Whereas~ sexual abuse affects every person in our community as a victim/survivor, or as a family member, friend, partner, co-worker or neighbor concerned for someone who has experienced abuse; and Whereas, it is critical to intensify public awareness of sexual abuse, community prevention of sexual abuse and support for agencies providing sexual abuse services; Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim September 21, 2001, to be Sexual Assault Awareness Day in Iowa City, and encourage all residents to promote a community free from sexual abuse. Mayor, City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, our founding fathers, in order to secure the blessings of liberty for themselves and their posterity, did ordain and establish a Constitution for the United States of America, and Whereas, it is of the greatest importance that all citizens fully understand the provisions and principles contained in the Constitution in order to effectively support, preserve and defend it against all enemies; and Whereas, the two hundred fourteenth anniversary of the signing of the Constitution provides an historic opportunity for all Americans to remember the achievements of the Framers of the Constitution, and the rights, privileges, and responsibilities afforded to us in this unique document; and Whereas, the independence guaranteed to American citizens, whether by birth or naturalization, should be remembered, Now, therefore, I, Emest W. I City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, on behalf of the citizens of Iowa City, I am pleased to join the Prairielands ATTC in celebrating September 2001 as National Alcohol and Drag Addition Recovery month in Iowa City, Iowa; and Whereas, acknowledging September 2001 offers advocates of substance use treatment an opportunity to educate the public and policymakers about the effectiveness of treatment, both societal and financial; and Whereas, substance use is a major public health problem that affects millions of Americans of all ages, races, and ethnic backgrounds and in all communities and which has a huge medical, societal and economic cost; and Whereas, thousands of health care providers have dedicated their lives to the recovery process and to the education of the public about alcoholism, drag dependence, and treatment issues.
