PROCLAMATION
Whereas, Iowa City was rounded in 1839 and selected the site of the new capitol on May 4, of that year; and
Whereas, The University of Iowa was fotmded February 25, 1847, and was Iowa's first public institution of higher learning; and
Whereas, in 1857 the state capitol was moved to Des Moines leaving The
University of Iowa to develop as the chief center of interest within the City;
and
Whereas, for over 150 years The University of Iowa has been educating young
people who have made positive impacts in this community, as well as the
state, and throughout the world; and
Whereas, on September 28, 2001, The University of Iowa will dedicate the Seamans Center for the Engineering Arts and Sciences.
Now, therefore, I, Ernest W, Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim September 28, 2001, to be
Searoans Center for the
Arts and Sciences Day
in Iowa City and urge citizens as well as visitors to our City to appreciate the
contributions of the University and City to make this community the special place it is.
