HomeMy WebLinkAbout2006-01-10 Award ~3 The awarding of the Iowa City Police Richard W. Lee Award presented an interesting dilemma for 2005. Seven worthy officers were nominated, but two officers equally demonstrated the highest standards for which this award is given. Believing both were deserving of this honor, it was decided to present two awards for this year. The recipients of the 2005 Richard W. Lee award are Bob Hartman and Dan Roth. Both officers were chosen as exemplifYing the four characteristics outlining this award; I) Practicing the profession of policing with dedication & generosity 2) Showing dignity & understanding at all times 3) Having a genuine compassion for both citizens & fellow officers 4) Demonstrating unique ways of accomplishing their chosen profession Officer Bob Hartman has been an Iowa City Police Officer since November 5, 2001. He is currently assigned to the Investigations Unit as the domestic violence investigator. In this position he has shown a real compassion for victims and their families. He has established a reputation which enhances our department's working relationship with other service providers. In addition, Bob has taken on the task of being a mentor for selected students at Grant Wood Elementary School and Southeast Junior High. He also has taken on a summer program where he established relationships with children in the Broadway area. He has endeared himself to many families living in that area, as well as staff at the Broadway Neighborhood Center. Officer Dan Roth has been an Iowa City Police Officer since March 22, 2001. He is currently assigned to Uniform Patrol on the 3-11 Watch. As a patrol officer, he demonstrates positive communication skills which make him very approachable to all people he encounters. Additionally, his love for bicycle patrol puts him in contact with those who normally do not interact with officers. Dan was selected to be the Iowa City representative for Safety Village where he interacts with hundreds of children each year, teaching them about safety in the community. He also is a certified safety seat inspector and spends time with the "Child Safety Seat Inspection" program where he provides a valuable service to parents of young children. Both officers are higWy conscientious and represent the Iowa City Police Department in the best possible light. They are favored by both citizens and their fellow officers. Their dedication and compassion in all situations makes them both worthy recipients of this award.
