HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001-11-13 Award Each year the Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau awards grants to
agencies across the state to be put towards efforts to improve
traffic safety. These efforts are directed to such things as OWl
enforcement, speed enforcement, underage drinking
enforcement, general traffic laws and seatbelt usage. The Iowa
City Police Department has one of these grants. A significant
portion of the focus of the Iowa City Police Department has been
toward seatbelt enforcement.
In the area of seatbelt usage, each participating agency in the
grant program conducts two surveys each year for seatbelt
compliance. For the past several years, drivers in Iowa City have
had the usage rate in the area between 80% and 85%. In
September of this year, the survey conducted indicated that the
usage rate was now at 88.1% compliance. Awards are granted
by the GTSB when usage rates of 70%, 75%, 80%, 85% etc are
reached. With an 85% usage rate being exceeded, Iowa City
is now one of a small but growing number of jurisdictions
that have reached this level of usage.
Jan Goldsmith, Area Administrator, is here to present the
Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau 85% Seatbelt Usage Award
to Police Chief RJ. Winkelhake and Captain Matt Johnson.
