HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001-11-13 Proclamation City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, Alpha Phi Omega--the nation's largest service fraternity--will participate in National Service Week, an event that the Fraternity has sponsored annually since 1979; and Whereas, this year's emphasis for National Service Week is Shaping Our Fraternity and Campus Environment for the Future, and Alpha Phi Omega chapters will be working to develop projects which will celebrate, promote, encourage and challenge the members of our community and nation to make a difference; and Whereas, Alpha Phi Omega members seek to introduce the spirit of volunteerism and service to individuals who might not otherwise become involved in paying tribute to those who gave so much in the past to make our lives better today and those who work today to make others lives better in the future; and Whereas, Alpha Phi Omega - Omicron Chapter at The University of Iowa will all work to promote these ideals and render service to their community. Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim the week of November 5 - 10, 2001 to be National Service Week in Iowa City, Iowa.~/d. ~ Mayor Signed in Iowa City, Iowa, ... ' ' .. ,' ,' ': .~., ' :, ., ~ _ City of Iowa City I PROCLAMATION Whereas axe Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) observes December 1 of each year as World AIDS Day, a day to expand and strengthen worldwide efforts to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS; and, Whereas UNAIDS estimates that over 36 million people worldwide are currently living with HIV/AIDS, with young people under the age of 25 accounting for more than half of all new infections; and, Whereas the American Association for World Health is encouraging a better understanding of the challenge of HIV/AIDS nationally as it recognizes that the number of people diagnosed with HIV and AIDS in the United States continues to increase, with up to 900,000 in the U.S. now infected; and, Whereas World AIDS Day provides an opportunity to focus local, national and international attention on HIV infection and AIDS and to disseminate information on how to prevent the spread of H1V; and, Whereas half of all new HIV infections in the US are among young Americans under the age of 25, the World AIDS Day 2001 theme, "/Care...Do You?" urges all youth and those who influence them to increase their awareness of the risk of H1V/AIDS for themselves and to use their influence in their families, among their friends and in their communities to help stem the tide of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim December 1, 2001 to be World AIDS Day in Iowa City. I urge all citizens to take part in activities and observances designed to increase awareness and understanding of H1V/AIDS as a global challenge, to take part in H1V/AIDS HIV/AIDS.
