HomeMy WebLinkAbout2002-02-19 Proclamation City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, Special Olympians have a strong desire to compete and win; and Whereas, Special Olympians know that bravery is measured in setting goals and attempting to reach them; and Whereas, Special Olympians recognize the joy, pride and self-worth, humility and disappointment, inherent in organized competition; and Whereas, Special Olympians appreciate the benefits that healthy competition and physical activity can bring; and Whereas, Special Olympians give the entire community a chance to gather and share in their spirit of accomplishment; Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the month of March, 2002 to be Special Olympics Month in the City of Iowa City and urge all citizens to commend and support the activities of the Special Olympics. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, environmental tobacco smoke is the third leading cause of preventable death in the United States; and Whereas, 65,000 people will die each year as a result of breathing the smoke of others' cigarettes; and Whereas, studies prove there is no safe level of exposure to environmental tobacco smoke; and Whereas, in March of 1999, C. Everett Koop came to Iowa City for a conference on lung cancer at the University of Iowa and encouraged restaurants to provide smoke-free dining facilities; and Whereas, in the spring of 2000, the Johnson County Tobacco Free Coalition formed CAFI~ (Clean Air For Everyone) to educate the community about hazards of secondhand smoke; and Whereas, in January of 2002, the Iowa City City Council passed a smoke-free restaurant ordinance to protect the health of all residents of Iowa City. Now, therefore, in recognition of this important life-saving effort, I, Ernest W. ' City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, Sertoma International, a civic organization, the motto of which is "Service to Mankind," has adopted a Freedom Week Program dedicated to the re-emphasis of the values and responsibilities of people in a free society, and Whereas, Sertoma International has promoted the distribution of copies of the Constitution of the United States throughout its membership clubs, and Whereas, the Old Capitol Sertoma Club of Iowa City is planning to carry out special patriotic activities in the form of the National Heritage Essay Contest for area 8th grade students, and Whereas, it seems proper and fitting to accord official recognition to this patriotic movement. Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lebman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim and designate the week of February 16-22, 2002, to be Sertoma's Freedom Week in Iowa City and urge the citizens of Iowa City to support the objectives of this program. Signed in Iowa City, Iowa, this 19th day of February, 2002. 3d City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, Tuesday, March 12, 2002 marks the 90th Anniversary of Girl Scouts of the USA, founded by Juliette Gordon Low in 1912; and Whereas, throughout its long and distinguished history, Girl Scouts - the pre- eminent organization for girls - has inspired millions of girls and women with the highest ideals of character, conduct and patriotism; and Whereas, through Girl Scouting, girls grow strong, gain self confidence and skills for success, and learn their duty to the world around them; and Whereas, Girl Scouting leads businesses and communities to teach girls the skills needed to take active roles in math, science, and technology careers to fulfill our country's economic needs; and Whereas, more than 3.6 million current Girl Scout members nationwide will be celebrating 90 years of an American tradition, with 50 million women who are former Girl Scouts who can be mentors to help today's girls succeed; and Whereas, Girl Scouts of the Mississippi Valley, Inc., with the help of 369 volunteers, serves 1,426 girl members in the Johnson county area. Now, therefore, I, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the week of March 10-16 to be Girl Scout Week in Iowa City.
