HomeMy WebLinkAbout2002-02-27 Proclamation City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the Grant Wood Area Chapter of the American Red Cross provides vital services, 365 days a year, to area residents. These services are available to individuals regardless of their race, education, income, or political persuasion; and Whereas, disaster victims depend on emotional and physical support from the Red Cross to help them with vouchers to pay for food, clothing, lodging, critical household goods, and other emergency articles and services; and Whereas, the Grant Wood Area Chapter helps save lives by teaching Iowa City residents disaster prevention and preparedness measures; and Whereas, the American Red Cross serves as a communications link between service members and their loved ones. Last fiscal year, chapter caseworkers helped relay emergency communications - news of births, deaths, and serious illness - to 434 eastern Iowa military service members and their families; and Whereas, the Grant Wood Area Chapter provides Iowa City residents with opportunities to participate in international relief efforts in countries around the world; and Whereas, Iowa City residents learn vital lifesaving skills, including CPR and first aid, under the tutelage of dedicated Red Cross instructors; and Whereas, Iowa City youth have learned the facts about H1V and AIDS, including prevention measures, through the dedicated efforts of Red Cross HIV/AIDS educators. Now, therefore, ~, Ernest w. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, International Women's Day is observed throughout the world as a day when women on all continents come together to focus on women's human rights; and Whereas, International Women's Day is rooted in the struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men; and Whereas, International Women's Day has assumed a global dimension for women in developed and developing countries; and Whereas, organizers in Iowa City have determined a day is not sufficient to adequately celebrate and discuss the accomplishments of women locally and globally; and Whereas, more than one-half of the world's population is female, women perform two- thirds of the world's work, and women represent over three-fifths of the world's literate population; and Whereas, Iowa women and women around the world share similar concerns; and Whereas, this is a time to reflect on women's progress, call for change where needed, and to celebrate women's acts of courage and determination in the fight for human rights. Now, therefore, i, Ernest w. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim the month of March 2002 to be International Women's Month in Iowa City, and I urge our citizens to join me in celebrating International Women's Month.
