Hi Eric. You are correct, it is not typical practice to accept public comment during our work sessions unless we are asking for a special presentation from a group outside of the city staff. Since both the police and fire chiefs will be speaking directly to the council about departmental budgets and concerns, I will not be opening the work session for public comment. Your request was somewhat unclear. It wasn't clear if you wish to address the council as a union representative or as a citizen about public safety isssues as they relate to the budget? As I already stated, both Chief Rocca & Chief Hargadine will be addressing the council about public safety departmental requests and concerns within the next week. I encourage you to work with either of them to bring up your budgetary concerns, since they are the department heads. If for some reason you do not believe that Chief Rocca can represent your concerns about the department, then I would suggest that you put your membership concerns directly in a letter or e-mail to the council so that they can be considered. You also have the options of contacting any of the council members directly or speaking at the public hearing about your concerns. FYI, I am copying this e-mail to the City Clerk, so that the council may be aware of my response to your e-mail. Mayor Wilburn, While I understand that it may not be cornmon practice to receive public input at council budget work sessions, I respectfully request your permission to address the Iowa City City Council at the earliest opportunity. As President of the International Association of Fire Fighters, Local 610, I am charged with the responsibility of representing membership concerns. In this busy time of budgetary planning, I would be honored to address some issues relative to public safety. Thank you, and I look forward to your reply. I shall always be available to you as we determine how we might better serve the citizens of Iowa City. Respectfully, Eric Nurnberg President IAFF Local 610 Iowa City Professional Fire Fighters 1
