Subject: Historic Preservation Commission vacancy
Honorable Council Members:
I am sending this letter via electronic mail to let you know of my intent
to apply for the vacancy for the new Longfellow Historic District
representative to the Historic Preservation Commission of Iowa City. This
application was mailed to the City Clerk today, February 23.
I am interested in this position for the opportunity to apply my
professional and avocational skills in historic preservation. As an
archaeologist I regularly make assessments about the eligibility of
historic properties for the National Register of Historic Places. On the
avocational side, My wife and I awarded an Iowa City Historic Preservation
Award in 2001 for exterior renovation to our home at 523 Grant St. We
continue to work toward the historically sensitive renovation of our ca.
1916 home in our limited free time from allowed by our busy careers. We
hope our efforts serve as a model for others, even if they are unable to
undertake similar work on their own.
My previous experiences with historic preservation have made me aware of
how important historic preservation is to the maintenance of the cultural
heritage of our community. I also have come to realize how much of this
effort is entirely voluntary and at the level of the individual in the
community. I hope to be able to provide recommendations that will assist
individuals in their efforts to preserve their community by providing
accurate and honest advice to the Historic Preservation Commission.
I have lived in Iowa City since 1985, having come here as an undergraduate.
I have considered Iowa City my home since 1988. My wife, an early modern
period historian and librarian, and I have lived in our home since 1993,
shortly after I was awarded a Master of Arts in Anthropology. We both are
employed a the University of Iowa and have strong sense of commitment to
our comm~unity. I am very much interested in the chance to serve my
community in this way and welcome any questions you may have for me. I may
be reached by phone or e-mail.
Sincerely,
Tim Weitzel
