Whereas, traumatic brain injury is among the nation's most significant public health concerns, is the leading cause of death and disability in young Americans, and yet it is largely preventable. Traumatic brain injury is a serious, national public health epidemic affecting at least 5.3 million Americans; Whereas, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of brain injuries in adults from ages 15 to 35; and falls are the leading cause among senior citizens. Both causes are preventable. Traumatic brain injury often results in significant impairment of an individual's physical, cognitive, and psychosocial functioning impacting an individual's ability to return to school, work, and home; Whereas, a substantial number of individuals with traumatic brain injury and their families do not have access to appropriate support and services, and remain unserved or underserved, and the lack of public awareness is so vast that traumatic brain injury is known in the disability community as the nation's "silent epidemic"; Whereas, the mission of the East Central chapter, as an affiliate with the Brain Injury Association of Iowa and the Brain Injury Association of America, is to create a better future through support for survivors and families, brain injury education, brain injury prevention, and advocacy for services and funding; Whereas, the Brain Injury Association of Iowa and its East Central chapter has recognized March as Brain Injury Awareness Month. NOW, therefore, I, Mayor Ross Wilburn, do hereby proclaim March, 2006, as National Brain Injury Awareness Month ~(~~ Mayor Signed in Iowa City, Iowa this ih day of March, 2006 '-) #02; i ~ ~ [..' .
