HomeMy WebLinkAbout2002-03-19 Appointment NOTICE THE CITY COUNCIL OF IOWA CITY IS CONSIDERING APPOINTMENT TO THE FOLLOWING COMMISSION: HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION One Vacancy - Three-Year Term March 29, 2002 - March 29, 2005 (Longfellow Historic District Representative) Duties of the Historic Preservation Commission include: conducting studies for the identification and designation of Historic Districts; reviewing and acting upon all applications for Certificate of Appropriateness; cooperating with property owners and city agencies regarding remedy of dangerous conditions; furthering the efforts of historic preservation in the City by making recommendations on preservation issues, when appropriate, by encouraging the historical, architectural or cultural value, and by encouraging persons and organizations to become involved in preservation activities. This Commission meets the second Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m and, if necessary, the fourth Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. Iowa City appointed members of the boards and commissions must be eligible electors of the City of Iowa City. Applications must be received by 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 27, 2002. The City of Iowa City encourages diversity in the appointment of citizens to boards and commissions. Persons interested in being considered should contact the City Clerk at the Civic Center, 410 E. Washington Street. If you fail to answer all the questions, Council will not consider your application. c~ork/bdcomapp( 1} doc September 2001 (2) PROPOSED AMENDED VERSION TO THE PROPOSED IOWA CITY CITY COUNCIL "RESOL UTION IN OPPOSITION TO 10WA SF 16.5, DECLARING ENGLISH THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE" RESOLUTION TO REPEAL T1]E "IOWA ENGLISH LANGUAGE REAFFIRMATION ACT" (SF 16~ WHEREAS Iowa has functioned successfully for more than 150 years without a law declaring an official language; and WHEREAS Most immigrants who move to Iowa and do not have English as their primary language soon learn English; and WHEREAS Almost all second generation immigrants to Iowa whose parents did not speak English as a primary language learn to speak fluent English; and WHEREAS Governor Tom Vilsack in his 2010 Report hopes to attract diverse people to come live in our great state of Iowa; and WltEREAS Iowa City wishes to be known as a community that welcomes diverse cultures, ethnicities and language speakers among its residents and visitors; and WHEREAS Making English the "official language" of Iowa sends a symbolic message to Iowa residents and potential residents around the globe that Iowa is a less-than-welcoming place; and WHEREAS The Iowa English Language Reaffirmation Act interferes in local government control by requiring compliance by Iowa's municipalities and may become an unfunded mandate; THEREFORE IT IS RESOLVED The City Council of Iowa City calls for the repeal oftbe "Iowa English Language Reform Act" and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED That the City Council proclaims that there is no need to adopt English as the "official" language for the state and its political subdivisions of Iowa; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED That a copy of this resolution will be forwarded to Governor Tom Vilsack, the Legislative leadership of both the Iowa House and Senate and to the Johnson County legislative representatives upon its passage by the City Council of Iowa City.
