HomeMy WebLinkAbout2006-04-04 Proclamation 0'ff p , i I I I : ~ &,j~ "" ~"'=l) .~ City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the strength of our nation, and all of its states and cities, flows from the promise of individual equality and freedom of choice; and Whereas, April 2006 is the 38th anniversary of the passage of Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, as amended, better known as the "Fair Housing Act", which declares that discrimination in the sale, rental or financing of housing based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, familial status or handicap is unlawful; and Whereas, shelter is a basic human need, and the quality of human life is greatly diminished when people suffer discrimination because of such irrelevant factors as their race, color, creed, religion, sex, national origin, familial status, or disability, making it essential that America, the State ofIowa and the City of Iowa City be rededicated to the policy that housing be available to all persons on the basis of equality and fairness; and Whereas, the Iowa City Municipal Ordinance, Title 2, prohibits discrimination in housing based on all the reasons listed above as well as age, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, presence or absence of dependents or public assistance source of income. Now, therefore, I, Ross Wilburn, Mayor of the CityofIowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the month of April 2006 to be Fair Housing Month in Iowa City and urge all citizens to support and endorse the practice and policy of fair housing and reaffirm the commitment to fair housing opportunities for all.
