PROCLAMATION
Whereas, April 11th marks the 34th anniversary of the passage of the Fair
Housing Act. This Act, as amended, prohibits discrimination against
individuals on the basis of race, color, religion, creed, national origin,
sex, handicap or familial status and encourages fair housing opportunities
for all citizens; and
Whereas, the City of Iowa City as well as the Iowa City Area Association of
REALTORS® are committed to the effort to highlight the Fair Housing
Law by continuing to address discrimination in our community, to
support programs that will educate the public about the right to equal
housing opportunities and to plan partnership efforts to assure every
American of their right to fair housing.
Now, therefore, I, Ernest W, Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa,
do hereby proclaim April 2002 to be
Fair Housing Month
in Iowa City. I urge all of our citizens to join in this observance by resolving to fight
discrimination in their personal daily lives and recognize this celebration throughout
the year.

Whereas, there are over 6,400 children age birth to 5 years living in Johnson
County; and
Whereas, high quality early experiences make a difference in children's lifelong
academic and social success; and
Whereas, Iowa ranks second in the nation in the number of working parents with
children up to the age of 5 years; and
Whereas, over 90% of brain development occurs in the first 3 years of life; and
Whereas, children's opportunities are our responsibilities;
Now, Therefore, i, Ernest W. Lehman, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do
hereby proclaim that the City of Iowa City join with others across our nation and around
the world to celebrate April 7 through April 13, 2002, as the
