PROCLAMATION
Whereas, the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction
(LTNISDR) is marking the "International Day for Disaster Reduction" on
October 13, 2010 with the theme "Making Cities Resilient: My City is
Getting Ready!"; and
Whereas, UNISDR is calling upon cities around the globe to recognize the
significant day; and
Whereas, Iowa City has been severely impacted by disasters in the past (e.g.,
2006 tornado and 2008 flood) and risk for future disasters remains a
pressing reality; and
Whereas, Iowa City should take the opportunity to: showcase its unique resilience
and solidarity when faced with disasters, commemorate its recovery after
the recent flood, and recognize that all citizens of Iowa City play a role in
mitigating, preparing for, responding to, and recovering from disasters that
may occur in the future;
Now, therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, Iowa, do
hereby proclaim October 13, 2010 to be
International Day for Disaster Reduction
in Iowa City and urge all citizens to: reflect that day on the effects of disasters
upon individuals and communities in Iowa City and around the globe, dedicate the
day to marking the recovery from the recent flood, and use it as an opportunity to
facilitate awareness on mitigating, preparing for, responding to, and recovering
from disasters that may occur in the future.
