HomeMy WebLinkAbout2010-10-26 ProclamationCity of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, Iowa City, Iowa is a community that acknowledges that a special vibrancy exists within the entire community when its individual citizens collectively "go the extra mile" in personal effort, volunteerism, and service; and Whereas, Iowa City, Iowa is a community that encourages its citizens to maximize their personal contribution to the community by giving of themselves wholeheartedly and with total effort, commitment, and conviction to their individual ambitions, family, friends, and community; and Whereas, Iowa City, Iowa is a community that chooses to shine a light on and celebrate individuals and organizations within its community who "go the extra mile" in order to make a difference and lift up fellow members of their community; and Whereas, Iowa City, Iowa acknowledges the mission of the Extra Mile America Foundation to create 100 Extra Mile cities and states in America and is proud to support "Extra Mile Day" on November 1, 2010. NOW, therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim November 1, 2010 to be Extra Mile Day in Iowa City and urge each individual in our community to take time on this day to not only "go the extra mile" in his or her own life, but to also acknowledge all those around who are inspirational in their efforts and commitment to make their organizations, families, community, country, or world a better place. r~. Mayor Signed in Io a City, Iowa, this 26`'' day o October, 20 City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, homelessness is the result of a complex set of circumstances that push people into poverty and force impossible choices between food, shelter and other basic needs; and Whereas hunger and homelessness remain two of our nation's most pressing domestic issues; and Whereas, hunger and homelessness are issues faced daily by hundreds of men, women, and children throughout our own community; and Whereas, this community continues to work towards developing shelter and hunger- relief resources and capacity to meet the needs of the men, women, and children who are homeless and hungry in our community; and Whereas, we may never end homelessness nor hunger, but do recognize that our work touches the lives of hundreds of men, women, and children who are hungry and homeless in our community every day-offering them hope, opportunity, and dignity. Now, therefore, I Matthew J. We all thank Iowa City and Iowa City Council for confirming the important advocacy, defense, and assistance by Iowa City that is necessary all throughout the year, which provides the bridge to the homeless and destitute poor that can lead so many of them from their setbacks in life to go past their obstacles to reach a better, self-sustaining life. We all thank you for your very important support. ~~ City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, last year in the United States, home fires caused 3,010 civilian fire deaths; and Whereas, almost two-thirds of reported home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms; and Whereas, households with inoperative smoke alarms now outnumber those homes with no smoke alarms, and smoke alarms most often fail because of dead or missing batteries; and Whereas, the designation of a special day to remind residents of Iowa City to change the batteries in their smoke alarms, timed to coincide with the fall ritual of changing clocks, would greatly diminish the chance of this tragedy occurring in Iowa City; and Whereas, smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years; and Whereas, November 7, 2010, is the day the citizens of Iowa City change their clocks from daylight savings time to standard time. NOW, therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the day of November 7th, 2010, to be Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery Day in Iowa City and urge all residents to change their smoke alarm batteries and install new smoke alarms if they are ten years old or older.
