See if you qualify at www.irs.gov; and Whereas, people move into and out of EITC eligibility based on changes in their earnings, their parental status or their marital status according. Many people will qualify for the first time this year due to economic changes in their incomes; and Whereas, EITC is a financial boost for working people hit by hard economic times; and Whereas, the Johnson County "You Earned It. Now Claim It!" offers the IRS VITA program, providing Free Tax Preparation at locations in Iowa City, Coralville, and North Liberty for households earning less than $49,000 in 2010; and Whereas, last year the "You Earned It. Now Claim It!" program assisted over 1,000 tax filers, who received a total of $1.8 million in federal and state tax refunds; and Whereas, the Iowa City Council encourages anyone who earned $48,362 or less from wages, self-employment or farming in 2010 to see if they qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit. Eligible workers can get their EITC only if they file federal income tax returns -even if they are not otherwise required to file -and specifically claim the credit. Now, therefore, I, Matthew J. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the City of Iowa City Human Rights Commission sponsors the Human Rights Award Breakfast each year to recognize those in our community who work to create an inclusive community spirit through their actions, activities, and programs; and Whereas, the City of Iowa City recognizes that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had a dream and dedicated his life to helping freedom exist for all people through his commitment to human rights and his non-violent philosophy; and Whereas, the City of Iowa City reaffirms its commitment to fostering diversity in our community. NOW, therefore, I, Matthew Hayek, Mayor of the City of Iowa City do hereby proclaim January 17, 2011 to be the official observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Birthday On January 17, 2011, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would be 82 years of age. The Iowa City Council would ask all residents to observe and celebrate Dr. King's unforgettable contributions to human rights and diversity, and asks all residents to continue their commitment and concern for equal rights for all persons.
