Kennedy on March 1, 1961, and more than 200,000 Americans ranging in age from 18 to 86 have served in 139 host countries; and Whereas, today, 8,655 volunteers are working with local communities in 77 host countries; and Whereas, Peace Corps is celebrating 50 years of promoting peace and friendship around the world; and Whereas, the three goals of Peace Corps are to help meet the need for trained men and women, promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served, and promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans; and Whereas, returned volunteers have brought their communities throughout the United States a deeper understanding of other cultures and traditions; and Whereas, more than 2,164 Iowans have served in the Peace Corps since 1961 and 99 Iowans are now serving in countries around the world; and Whereas, approximately 32 University of Iowa graduates are now serving in Peace Corps, and more than 585 University alums have served since 1961; and Whereas, the Iowa Peace Corps Association held a forum on March 1 to commemorate Peace Corps' 50th Anniversary; and Whereas, the Iowa Peace Corps Association and the University of Iowa Peace Corps Office will host a gathering on March 24 to celebrate and send off new volunteers to their Peace Corps service. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Matthew J. City of Iowa city PROCLAMATION Whereas, the Meals on Wheels program of Elder Services, Inc. has been providing hot meals and friendly faces to homebound senior citizens of the greater Iowa City area for over eight years; and Whereas, Meals on Wheels relies on volunteer drivers to deliver hearty and nutritious meals seven days a week for over 180 clients; and Whereas, it is projected that Johnson County will have 9,511 persons 65+ by 2011, and thus the vital services provided by Meals on Wheels will be increasingly in demand; and Whereas, the Meals on Wheels program is joining the 2011 March for Meals campaign of the Meals on Wheels Association of America in an effort to increase public awareness, recruit new volunteers and increase funding; and Whereas, the centerpiece of the month long campaign is the Mayors for Meals Day on March 23, where mayors and elected officials show their support for Meals on Wheels by delivering meals to seniors. NOW, Therefore, I, Matthew J.
