HomeMy WebLinkAbout2011-05-03 ProclamationCity of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, older adults with evolving needs living in Iowa City and througl~.,u~ ~~~~ nation are an increasing population; and Whereas, the increasing number of baby boomers reaching traditional retirement age highlight the need for increased support of older adults; and Whereas, older Americans are valuable members of our society who enhance our communities and personal lives; and Whereas, it is the responsibility of this and all U.S. communities to work collaboratively to address older adults' unique health and long-term care challenges; and Whereas, it is crucial that communities modernize systems of care to help empower older Americans and give them more control over their own lives; and Whereas, communities can improve older citizens' overall quality of life by helping: Make behavioral changes in their lifestyles that can reduce the risk of disease, disability, and injury; Obtain the tools needed to make informed decisions about, and gain better access to, existing health and long-term care options in their communities; Create more options to remain at home as long as possible and avoid placement in nursing homes. Now, therefore, I Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim May 2011 to be Older Americans Month in Iowa City And urge everyone to honor our older adults and the professionals, family members, and citizens who care for them. City of Iowa City PROCLAMATION Whereas, the bicycle is an economical, environmentally sound, and effective means of transportation, recreation, and fitness; and Whereas, the bicycle is considered a legitimate vehicle in a1150 states and is entitled to legal and responsible use of all public roads in Iowa, except interstate highways; and Whereas, increased use of the bicycle will benefit all citizens by improving air quality, reducing traffic congestion and noise, decreasing use of and dependence upon finite energy resources and will foster healthy lifestyles; and Whereas, the City of Iowa City has an ongoing commitment to encourage bicycling as a viable mode of transportation and recreation; and Whereas, May 15-21 has been declared National Bike to Work Week, and the City of Iowa City supports bicycling to work; and Whereas, the League of American Bicyclists has established the month of May as National Bicycle Month. NOW, therefore, I, Matthew J.
