EXPERIENCE AND/OR ACTIVITIES WHICH YOU FEEL QUALIFY YOU FOR
THIS POSITION:
I bring experience and knowledge of how a public facility can interface with a diverse public regarding
access to information and use of space. I previously worked at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library (part
of the National Archives and Records Administration, anon-partisan federal agency) in Ann Arbor,
Michigan as an entry-level archivist. My job duties included processing document collections and
providing reference service to researchers onsite, via e-mail, and by telephone. I also coordinated the
Library's public events. This included organizing events sponsored by the Library as well as serving as a
liaison with community groups that sought the Library as a space to host their events. This work provided
excellent insight into the possibilities and problems that libraries can encounter in the area of community
relations. This knowledge and experience would be beneficial for serving on the public board that helps
craft policies for multiple users within the community.
WHAT IS YOUR PRESENT KNOWLEDGE OF THIS ADVISORY BOARD?
As I understand it, the Iowa City Public Library's Board of Trustees has two primary functions. First, it
provides a forum for the citizens of Iowa City to voice their input and concerns about the library's policies
and operation. The monthly meetings of the Board provide an opportunity for citizens to participate in
discussions about the function and future of the library within the larger community.
Second, with this public input the board "directs and controls all the affairs of the library." In deliberating
and enacting library policies, the board is not only guided by public input, but also by library's stated
mission of being "an innovative and responsive community center that supports lifelong learning, literacy,
and access to the world of ideas," as well as a commitment to its values of "intellectual freedom, excellence
in customer service, community building, working collaboratively, minimizing barriers to use, providing a
welcoming environment, and awell-trained staff."
From reading the minutes of recent board meetings, the library's annual report, its strategic plan for 2011,
as well as coverage of the library in the local media, I have obtained an understanding about the issues the
board regularly addresses. These include discussions of collection development, library programs, patron
services, facility use, budgeting, issues of safety and security for staff and patrons, and possible expansion
through branch libraries.
WHAT CONTRIBUTIONS CAN YOU MAKE TO THIS ADVISORY BOARD
(REASON FOR APPLYING)?
I am striving to be more involved in my community, and service on this Board will allow me to contribute
to the intellectual and cultural development of my community which meaningful to me as a professional, a
scholar, a parent, and a citizen. These multiple perspectives, I believe, would be an asset to the Board and
its deliberations on library policy. As a historian, I appreciate the implications of decisions that influence
what information will be made available to communities and how it will be accessed. As a university
student I have enjoyed the unique offerings of the public library, and I understand the importance of
interaction between the university community and Iowa City residents. As a father, I understand some of
the needs of families who access the library as community space, educational events, and resources for
children (e.g., storybooks, CD's, children's website). Finally, I appreciate the role of libraries in creates an
informed citizenry, which is the foundation of a dynamic and engaged community. ~;
