HomeMy WebLinkAboutSolid Waste ppta NP CITY OF IOWA CITY Comprehensive Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan Update Jen Jordan Recycling Coordinator June 20, 2011 1987 Iowa Groundwater Protection Act (4556.306) o Requires cities & counties to develop waste management plans o Requires cities & counties to provide for final disposal o Plan must be updated every five years (recent change from every 3 years) Regional Integrated Solid Waste Comprehensive Pla o ECICOG's reporting requirements to M o Waste reduction activities that have occurred since last plan update in 2008 o Goals for service area based on stakeholder input I I `'' "' �x Goals 1 -5 of 11 i. Promote a significant unifying goal to the "Exceed 50% waste reduction by 2017." I 2. As a function of the comp plan, establish a local committee to evaluate progress toward goals. s. Promote and expand waste reduction and recycling education activities. (EXAMPLE to FOLLOW) 4. Expand use of Iowa City Landfill's Regional Collection Center (RCC) for hazardous waste 5. Continue to support regional approach to recycling Goals 6 -11 of 11 6. Investigate new landfill technologies & enhance efficiency and environmenta protection. 7. Develop strategies to increase recycling among multi - family households (EXAMPLE to FOLLOW) 8. Review /evaluate waste and recycling collection programs (EXAMPLE to FOLLOW) 9. Reduce construction & demolition waste io. Expand composting in Johnson County > >. Work with policy makers to reduce waste such as water bottles, plastic bags and electronic wastes. EXAMPLES 3. Promote and expand waste reduction and recycling education activities. 8. Review /evaluate waste and recycling collection programs o Change to dual stream: April 4 o Education /outreach o New flyers out to all 15,000 customers o Video with City Channel 4 o Program at library o YES Program (starts this week) o Social media in progress Results o Slight increase in tonnage in May over May 2010 o 8% curbside o 17% drop -off EXAMPLE 7. Develop strategies to increase recycling among multi - family households o Working with Attorney's Office to draft code amendment for new buildings— should be ready in July o Developing recycling pilot project for existing apartments to begin October] Summary o Comp plan will set goals for waste reduction, recycling, education, etc. o Resolution will be before Council tomorrow night for consideration CITY OF IOWA CITY
