PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, country schools were the core of education across t11%, iictLivii
and in Iowa for more than 100, years, and
WHEREAS, these school centers helped to create communities and a sense
of identity and tradition for thousands of students, and
WHEREAS, country school students fondly recall their education and often
credit their successes, values and skills to that experience, and
WHEREAS, in the early 1900s, Johnson County was home to nearly 150
one -room schools with more than 90 were in operation in the 1950s until
school consolidation took hold in Iowa, and
WHEREAS, the Johnson County Historical Society is planning a county-
wide Country School Celebration August 10 -14, and
WHEREAS, the four -day Country School Celebration will include a variety
of educational and networking opportunities and an all school reunion to
commemorate our historic rural education,
Now, therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, do
hereby proclaim the second week in August to be
Country School Week in Johnson County
and congratulate country school educators and classmates on their rural
education and their many contributions to the vitality of our area.
