PROCLAMATION
Whereas, homelessness is the result of a complex set of circumstances that push
people into poverty and force impossible choices between food, shelter and other
basic needs; and
Whereas, hunger and homelessness remain two of our nation's most pressing
domestic issues; and
Whereas, hunger and homelessness are issues faced daily by hundreds of men,
women, and children throughout our own community; and
Whereas, this community continues to work towards developing shelter and hunger -
relief resources and capacity to meet the needs of the men, women, and children who
are homeless and hungry in our community; and
Whereas, we may never end homelessness nor hunger, but do recognize that our
work touches the lives of hundreds of men, women, and children who are hungry
and homeless in our community every day— offering them hope, opportunity, and
dignity.
Now, therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, by virtue of the authority vested in me as
Mayor of Iowa City, do hereby proclaim November 12th through the 20th, 2011, to be
Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week
in Iowa City, Iowa, and urge all citizens to join in recognizing the important roles we
each can and do play in making a difference in the lives of men, women, and children
who are hungry and homeless in our community.

PROCLAMATION
Whereas, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed an Armistice Day for
November 12, 1919, and the United States Congress passed a parallel resolution
seven years later on June 4, 1926, to make the 11 th of November every year an
authorized holiday: "a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be
thereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day';" and
Whereas, in 1953, an Emporia, Kansas shoe store owner named Al King offered a
plan to expand Armistice Day to recognize all veterans, not just those who served
in World War I, and started a movement to turn Armistice Day into "All Veterans
Day;" and as a result of his efforts a bill was passed by Congress and signed into
law by President Dwight Eisenhower on May 26, 1954 replacing "Armistice" with
"Veterans;" and
Whereas, tonight we are here to honor all our veterans, courageous men and women
who secure, defend, and maintain these core principles upon which our Nation's
freedoms depend and especially those who are currently deployed; and
Whereas, on Veterans Day, let us pause to reflect on the sacrifices of those who have
put on the uniform to serve in the United States military, and have proved their
heroism and love of country time and time again, from Yorktown and Gettysburg
to Iwo Jima, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, Korea, Iraq and Afghanistan.
Now Therefore, I, Matthew J. Hayek, Mayor of the City of Iowa City, do hereby
proclaim November 11, 2011, to be
Veterans Remembrance Day
in Iowa City and commemorate the end of World War I with the signing of the Armistice
on the 11 th hour of the 11 th Day of the 11 th Month of 1918; and ask that the community
remember the sacrifices and contributions our service men and women have made to the
cause of peace and freedom throughout our history.
