There are several important issues that should be discussed at these meetings. A few
examples:
• The recent report on TIFs in Johnson County;
• Governance and financing of the Joint Emergency Communication Center
(JECC);
• Governance and financing of the animal shelter;
• Disproportionate minority contact within our schools and law enforcement
agencies;
• A regional plan for affordable housing;
• The impact of proposed changes to commercial property taxes in Iowa.
Yes, these issues can be construed as controversial. Yes, we are unlikely to agree on
every point. But to continue to meet and pretend that we are discussing anything of
importance does a disservice to our constituents. We simply cannot afford to continue to
ignore these topics.
We also need to adjust the agendas to include:
1. Reports from each entity
2. Other
3. Comments from the public
There is no other format for this type of intergovernmental communication. The Joint
Meeting could and should be used to discuss these and other important issues.
